Lady Rubernus was utterly startled to find Whitney at the Ducal Mansion. Seeing her disheveled state, she wore an expression that showed she couldn’t even guess what had happened.

“My goodness! Whitney!”

“I’m back.”

“What on earth happened to you?”

“…There was an accident. It seems Her Majesty the Queen has made her move.”

Her aunt, looking utterly exasperated, led her into the mansion. Whitney looked so exhausted at a glance that her aunt refrained from asking further questions and instead entrusted her to a maid.

As she soaked in warm water, memories of the accident kept resurfacing. The situation felt so eerily identical that old wounds began reopening once more. Would this have never happened if she hadn’t rushed? Perhaps everything would have been fine if she’d just sent a letter to dissolve the engagement from the start.

Even if she had told Her Majesty the Queen that she intended to break off the engagement, it likely wouldn’t have changed anything. The Queen hadn’t been targeting her—she had intended to use Whitney to kill Chester.

His desperate cry echoed in her ears like a haunting refrain. Overwhelmed by the voice constantly ringing in her mind, she covered her ears in distress. She had let her guard down, carried away by the realization that she’d become the head of the house, foolishly believing everything had finally returned to how it should be.

‘It’s alright. I’ve already sent word that I’ll break off the engagement, so it’ll be fine now.’

Chester would never again be placed in such a difficult position because of her. She deliberately submerged her face in the water, forcing herself to regain composure.

She planned to leave this place as early as tomorrow to inspect her domain, so by the time he woke up, she’d already be somewhere else.

He would surely agree to the annulment anyway, so there was nothing to worry about.

After washing up and changing clothes, Whitney lay down on the sofa. Though she’d gone to check whether he was alright, unease gnawed at her, making it impossible to rest comfortably. She closed and opened her eyes repeatedly against the sunlight streaming through the window, utterly drained. She wished time would simply pass while she remained in this state, wanting to do absolutely nothing.
