I didn’t mean to make you cry. I thought you’d be happy.

He immediately approached her, holding the letter, frozen as he watched her silently shed tears.

“I really didn’t mean to make you cry.”

It was true.

Chester reached out and wiped away her tears. Didn’t people usually rejoice when receiving gifts? He hadn’t anticipated this reaction at all.

“I must have misunderstood. Please don’t cry.”

Whitney kept wiping her tears with the back of her hand, unable to stop them. The endless cascade of clear liquid made Karl feel as if a sudden downpour had begun.

A suffocating feeling, like standing in relentless rain that blurred his vision entirely. The sound of raindrops hitting the floor made him feel distant and faint.

Chester stood helplessly for a moment, then extended his hand and pulled her into an embrace. He couldn’t think of anything else to do.

He patted Whitney’s back lightly, trying to comfort her. Her slender body trembled faintly. Watching her cry silently without making a sound filled him with such pity that he’d embraced her without even realizing.

“Now no one else can see you, and you won’t see anyone either—so cry as much as you want.”

He wasn’t sure if those words brought her any comfort, but at least others wouldn’t witness it. He stood there for a long while, letting her tears soak into him.

After some time, he lowered his head at the small movement he felt against his chest. Seeing her bury her face and look utterly lost, he relaxed his hold—and Whitney quietly slipped out of his loosened embrace.

She lifted her head but immediately lowered it again. The image of her flushed nose and red-rimmed eyes was seared into his mind, impossible to erase.

“…Please don’t stare at me. It’s embarrassing.”
