Blackening the Affectionate Male Lead (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 62
“You should have prevented her from ever entering high society again.”
Violet set down her teacup as she spoke. The Queen lowered her eyes, clicked her tongue as she watched Violet state her opinion.
“If you desire something, you must think about how to obtain it. Princess, do not forget that I am the one on your side—not anyone else. Who else would understand your heart, having come from a foreign land?”
“I’m sorry, but I doubt I share Her Majesty the Queen’s sentiments.”
The Queen loved the King, but she had never loved Karl. She thought it better to be unhappy beside someone she didn’t love than beside someone she did.
At the very least, if she stayed with the one she loved, she wouldn’t suffer the torment of false hope. Still, she had no intention of breaking off the engagement with Karl. Doing so would mean the Kingdom of Petontra would no longer accept her.
Violet had intervened to stop Melissa partly because she found her irritating, but also because of a small hope sparked by her conversation with Lady Rubernus.
“There were other witnesses besides Melissa. If I help you, what will you offer me in return?”
“That depends entirely on what Your Highness desires. Of course, I’ll also need to verify how valuable the hand you’re showing me truly is.”
At Lady Rubernus’s words, Violet recounted what she’d seen: Chester following a knight elsewhere, and after hearing Whitney’s words, going to the beach and witnessing Karl fall rapidly from a low height, then Melissa pulling him ashore as he washed up.
She merely affirmed that Melissa’s claim of having saved Karl was truthful—but she did not confirm Chester had pushed him. Thus, even the King chose not to comment on what she’d said.
“I don’t want this engagement. In fact, I’d be glad if Melissa and Prince Karl developed feelings for each other. The one I desire is someone else.”
“…Might that someone be Prince Chester?”
“I don’t know whether to be glad or saddened. My feelings are so plain to see that surely he must notice them too. It’s not Prince Karl I want—it’s Prince Chester. So, Lady Rubernus, you know what you must do, don’t you?”
Prolonging this would ultimately work against Chester. To support the princess’s testimony, it needed to be verifiable. The King judged such matters fairly, and as many still sided with Prince Karl, the outcome was already decided in several ways.

Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away
This is also on my reread list!
This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.
Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.
But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.
Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.
I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.
The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.
As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
