But unfortunately, Whitney had anticipated this situation and left evidence in her private chamber.

“There is evidence.”

“…This is turning into quite an odd situation. One claims to have witnessed it, and another claims to have evidence—both from the very same Ducal Mansion of Orleans.”

The king alternated his gaze between Melissa, who lay prostrate on the floor, and Whitney, who stood holding Chester’s hand. The queen glared at Whitney as though ready to pounce on her at any moment.

“Most of all, it couldn’t have been a fall from the cliff.”

“How can you be so sure?”

“As everyone knows, the garden lies behind the castle. At its edge, the view is so breathtakingly beautiful it’s almost beyond words. However, because the wind blows strongly toward the castle, anyone falling from the cliff would be pushed by the wind and strike the cliff face.”

Even if they were lucky enough to land in the water, they’d end up in a different spot from where they’d originally been pushed.

“The princess seems to know one thing but not another. The waves below the cliff always push everything toward the beach. That’s likely why Karl survived. Moreover, Karl possesses such strong mental fortitude that even if he did fall from the cliff, he could still have survived—despite someone’s attempts to frame him.”

“Your Majesty the Queen is correct—the waves below the cliff are indeed powerful and tend to push things toward the shore. But if someone fell from the cliff, it’s highly likely they’d end up somewhere else entirely, since they’d have thrashed about trying to survive. However, if they fell from a spot other than the cliff, the story would be entirely different.”

The king narrowed his eyes. Rubbing his chin thoughtfully, he glanced between the queen and the crowd, then signaled with a gesture.

“Can the princess substantiate what she’s claiming?”

People were no longer curious about whose statement held the truth. They watched with keen interest, eager to see whose side the king would take. Since Chester hadn’t been officially declared guilty, no one else could leave the ballroom either.

Everyone was a suspect, and both the ballroom and the castle were the scenes of the incident.

Whitney shook her head. To prove everything she’d stated, someone would have to actually fall from the cliff. Though that would also verify the queen’s claim, it wasn’t necessary.
