Whitney got into the carriage with Melissa. Although it would have been more convenient to go separately, they decided to take the ducal carriage due to prying eyes.

It was the first time Whitney had ridden in Duchess of Orleans’ private carriage—she recalled always riding alone in unpleasant carriages before. She looked at Melissa seated across from her.

“Have you never seen His Highness Prince Karl at any banquet, sister?”

“Of course I have. It’s just that he’s so hard to approach—I’ve never seen him this closely before. Everyone will surely be envious once they find out.”

Melissa smiled as she smoothed her red hair with her hand. Whitney, gazing at the red strands, reached out and tugged gently at one lock.

“Ah! What are you doing now?”

“I thought something was stuck to it, so I tried to pull it off… Sorry.”

“Then you could’ve just said so! What’s with this behavior!”

“I was worried you’d be frightened if it were a bug. Imagine if you discovered it later while talking to His Highness Prince Karl—that’d be terrible.”

“Since when did you start thinking like that for me? Next time, just tell me. I’ll either remove it myself or ask a maid.”

Whitney nodded. She took out a handkerchief and carefully tucked the strand of hair she’d pulled into it. Melissa seemed completely unaware.

‘Now I’ll know for sure whether her hair is dyed.’

Melissa kept fussing with her hair, using her fingers to comb it, clearly displeased at the thought that a bug might have been clinging to it.

Leaving the awkward atmosphere inside behind, the carriage quickly reached the palace. However, it wasn’t the Queen’s palace or even the east wing of the main palace where Karl stayed—it was the detached palace.

Since only Chester resided there, Whitney thought they must have come to the wrong place.
