She wore a uniform instead of a dress and pulled on black gloves. She had injured her hand while subduing Karl. Though she’d received treatment, she didn’t want Chester to know about the wound.

It had been an almost instinctive act, yet somehow she felt he shouldn’t find out. After all, he could be unusually fussy about her at times.

‘I don’t know the exact mood inside the palace, but it probably isn’t good.’

They’d prepared for a siege, but fortunately, aside from a few knights who’d escaped with Karl, no one else was in sight. She’d decided to leave Sir Randy and the rest of the knights at the Ducal Mansion and bring only half with her into the palace.

“Will you be all right?”

“I’m fine. It stings a little, but it’s not bad enough to keep me from moving.”

Whitney clenched and unclenched her hand, offering a smile. Truthfully, pain flared with every movement, but she didn’t want to worry anyone. If worse things were yet to come, what did a mere scratch on her hand matter?

“Prince Karl is still unconscious, isn’t he?”

“Yes. His Highness nearly suffocated… but since he didn’t die, he should be fine.”

If the king learned of this, he might accuse her of attempting regicide. Of course, from her perspective, claiming she hadn’t known it was Karl would be enough.

Right now, the king would likely try to pin treason on Whitney instead. A cornered monarch was certainly capable of such a move. The queen was probably still confined to her chambers and wouldn’t be aware of what was truly happening.

Knowing her character, she wouldn’t let her traitorous son go unpunished. Since she’d been unable even to flee back to her kingdom, she might already be looking for another way out.

Whitney hurried toward the palace.

When the Orleans knights reached the palace gates, an intense tension spilled over from beyond the walls. Outside the darkened palace, the grounds were filled with people holding torches. They stood breathlessly before the closed gates, eyes fixed intently on the entrance as if ready to storm in at any moment.

Whitney accepted help dismounting from her horse and then addressed the knight guarding the main gate.
