Chester flicked the blood off his sword. He ran his tongue over his lips as blood splattered onto the floor.

The sudden ambush by assassins had left him disoriented. Scratching his chin, he looked down at his black gloves.

“I can’t even tell if they’re stained with blood.”

He had intended to return to his room, change clothes, and wait for Whitney—but Aaron quickly approached and reported Karl’s movements. Noticing the absence of several knights who should have been at the palace, Chester immediately sprang into action. Fearing it would be too late to mobilize a full retinue of knights, he followed Karl’s trail with Aaron alone.

And now, the scene before him was devastating. Fortunately, Princess Violet was unharmed, but her maids and knights who accompanied her had suffered injuries.

“Aaron, report the situation.”

“…The assassins are barely clinging to life.”

Chester let out a soft chuckle as he looked at the man barely standing, sword in hand. No matter how thoroughly masked he was, he couldn’t hide those crimson eyes resembling the Queen’s or the golden strands of hair sticking out. What possible reason could he have had to attack Princess Violet? It couldn’t be that he intended to make an enemy of Petontra.

His blue eyes swept slowly over the chaotic scene, deep in thought—until his gaze fell upon Princess Violet, trembling on the ground.

Her eyes, brimming with fear and tangled with fury, looked utterly bewildered. Her dress was soaked in blood, and the carriage lay shattered. The scattered luggage had narrowly missed her as it spilled onto the ground.

“Are you all right?”

“What—what is all this? Out of nowhere, assassins appeared—they tried to kill me! They claimed they were sent by the Kingdom of Karulo… Why would the Kingdom of Karulo do this? Could Her Majesty the Queen possibly…?”

Princess Violet stammered, clearly shaken. With a dazed expression, she wept as she looked around her. Moans of pain filled the air, and only then did Chester finally grasp the situation.

‘This happened right after I left and Karl spoke with Father…’

Chester tilted his head upward toward the sky. Why did everyone have to complicate things so much? There was being discreet—and then there was this blatant betrayal from behind.
