The bird that hadn’t flown away suddenly took off with a soft flutter and landed comfortably on the shoulder of the man stepping down from the carriage. Whitney quickly left the room and practically ran downstairs.

“Your Grace?”

“A guest has arrived urgently. Please have tea prepared in the drawing room.”

Seila, startled by Whitney’s hurried departure, snapped to attention and rushed toward the kitchen. Whitney straightened her attire and stood before the front door.

The butler’s eyes widened as he opened the door, then clutched his chest.

“Huh—Your Grace!”

“I already know who’s come, so calm yourself and open the door.”

He swallowed hard, then composedly opened the front door. Immediately, Chester and several knights entered.

“Duke Orleans, I apologize for arriving unannounced, but urgent matters compelled me. Please don’t take offense.”

“I, too, had something I wished to discuss with Your Highness—you’ve come at a perfect time.”

From his flushed expression, it seemed he’d heard news of Morris. Whitney instructed the servants to prepare a place for the knights to rest, then accompanied Chester to the drawing room.

Though surprised by the sudden visit, she couldn’t bring herself to speak immediately—the look on his face was too grave. Seila arrived carrying a tray with teacups and a teapot. After warming the cups and setting them down, she poured the tea.

A glass of cool water was also placed before Chester. He took a long, refreshing gulp and let out a deep sigh.

“You seem out of breath.”

“Ah, I had to exert myself a bit.”
