“The terms will be exactly as written in the contract. Are you truly certain you’re fine with becoming knights of the ducal house?”

Whitney gave Randy a puzzled look at his immediate declaration that he wished to join the ducal household.

“I’ve already reviewed the contract thoroughly. Are you truly accepting all fifty-five of us under these exact terms?”

Although the number was larger than expected, there was ample space to accommodate them—so much so that they wouldn’t even need to house regular soldiers, which was actually advantageous. Had the number been closer to one hundred, the royal court might have intervened, but fifty-five was a suitably modest figure unlikely to draw suspicion.

She maintained her composed expression and spoke gravely.

“As you’ve likely heard, the ducal house currently lacks both private soldiers and knights—in fact, it’s as though we have none at all.”

“Rumors about House Orleans have been circulating lately. Shouldn’t we be concerned?”

“Do not worry about delayed payments.”

She clearly understood the ducal mansion’s financial difficulties. However, recent ventures had turned out well, so payment issues were no longer a concern—especially since most wage arrears had already been resolved. As long as nothing new arose, they would be fine.

“You may leave whenever you wish, but you must commit to staying together for three years.”

“As long as lodging and meals are provided, we have no objections. All we seek is a place where we can serve with honor.”

“Do not concern yourself with that. There is ample space here for all fifty-five of you. I’ll prepare the old barracks previously used by soldiers. Training grounds and equipment will also be provided. Above all, I promise you I will never ask you to do anything that would tarnish your honor.”

“Understood. Since the winery must continue to be protected, we intend to split our forces.”

Whitney nodded. She still couldn’t afford to let her guard down.

“With increased attention lately, please keep a close watch for any suspicious individuals. There are likely more people targeting the vineyards now.”
