The road to Klein was the same one Caella had taken when she first came to Lusenford. Though she had been to Lusenford twice, she had never traveled back to Klein along this route.

As they drew closer to Klein, the weather grew increasingly warm. The once-cool breeze had already vanished without a trace, and vibrant flowers bloomed luxuriantly.

Concerned for Caella’s health, her husband rode beside her carriage instead of leading the procession as he had on their previous journey to Lusenford, now accompanying her like a personal knight.

Traveling down a road she’d never taken before, Caella realized something anew.

Lately, she’d occasionally forgotten the thought that she ought to die. Watching the scenery outside the carriage window had become enjoyable. Even setting down her utensils after a meal without feeling regret—though rare—had begun to happen now and then.

“Bee. Caella.”

It was slightly pleasant when Pheon occasionally picked wildflowers or bought blooms from girls selling them roadside, placing them on her lap.

Caella looked at the colorful poppies covering her knees. Pheon always brought her flowers, carefully watching her expression. Though it was hard to tell whether she was smiling or not, she no longer furrowed her brow—and to Pheon, that counted as a smile.

“We’ll stay at Paphil tonight.”

“Yes.”

“Are you feeling tired?”

“I’m fine.”

She sometimes forgot the terrifying truth that her husband was the son of a dragon. She also occasionally forgot that she was utterly powerless, with nothing left she could do.

Even the fact that her husband was stopping her from dying—she forgot that sometimes too. Though she remained burdened by many annoyances and indifferent to most things, the position of Grand Duchess wouldn’t let her stay idle.

Before her regression, that position had bound her, preventing her from doing anything at all—but now, it had become so vital that she couldn’t simply dismiss it out of disinterest without consequence. True, Pheon had made it so, but the role of Grand Duchess was supposed to be exactly that.
