The man, whose voice and demeanor were endlessly tender, seemed unaware that he was drenched in blood.

It wasn’t splattered from somewhere else—it looked as though fresh heads, arms, ears, and noses had sprouted anew along the severed planes. A vivid trail of blood ran down his neck, precisely following the clean-cut line where his head had once been severed. Caella gasped, barely managing to get out the most urgent words first. Pheon stared down at her silently for a while before reluctantly nodding.

Was he displeased that she’d brought up business before anything else? She couldn’t tell. Her whole body had been covered in goosebumps for so long that merely standing upright was exhausting for Caella.

“Is that so? It’s alright.”

“You weren’t there in the castle…”

Her breath caught, and her words came out broken. She was annoyed at the tears spilling down her cheeks.

“It’s alright. No one will be harmed.”

Pheon declared this with absolute certainty right here on the spot, without even going to inspect the castle himself. His conviction was so unwavering that Caella found it strangely baffling.

She remembered the monster that had come to her, sobbing uncontrollably. Neither that one nor any of the others dared even step inside. They were afraid.

“Don’t cry, Caella. It’s alright. Were you frightened by that? There’s no need to be.”

Dried blood encircled each of his knuckles several times over. Yet every one of his fingers remained perfectly attached—neat, clean, and strong. The only part untouched by blood was the very tip of his fingers.
