“How can this even be possible?”

Beatrice wanted to grab anyone and demand an answer, but in the hideous, chilly grand duchess’s bedroom—now relocated to a barely heated room—only the maids delivering three meals a day and a physician visiting once daily came to see her. This simply couldn’t happen.

To make matters worse, something must have gone wrong en route, since she’d arrived with barely half her trunk. She was missing essential items: dresses for afternoon tea, nightgowns to wear when in a foul mood, a fur hat for small gatherings, a fan, pearl necklace and bracelets, light dance slippers, and riding boots—all causing significant trouble.

“Ugh, there are even medicines over there…!”

Her outburst of irritation triggered a violent fit of coughing—hack, hack! Her throat still felt shredded, and her voice cracked unnaturally. Beatrice lay fuming in bed.

“No, I don’t even need some silly potion.”

That wasn’t the point. With her years of experience, would she really rely on such cheap tricks to seduce a man? She could manage perfectly well without them now. Keeping Pheon—that stupid, dull-witted man—tied to her was as effortless and natural as breathing.

But she hadn’t even gotten the chance!

“Excuse me. I’ll come in.”

Knock, knock—the woman physician entered without waiting for permission. Beatrice disliked her immensely.

Lusenford was far too barbaric and utterly ignorant of refined etiquette. The way subordinates showed respect to their superiors here was utterly disgraceful. But Beatrice, struggling to catch her breath, could only glare at the woman with her eyes.

“You look lively. You’ll be out of bed soon.”

“Don’t you know any manners?”

“Even though your voice sounds hoarse, you’re talking just fine—should be fully recovered in about two weeks.”
