Would Pheon really get rid of even the butler? It was already the second time he’d mentioned replacing him, not to mention the whole incident with the head maid—and given everything he’d done so far, it sounded quite plausible.

That was right. Caella didn’t fully trust him. How could she possibly trust Pheon, when she herself had been imprisoned, nearly starved to death, and had even gratefully drunk poison to end it all? All she trusted now was the small vial in her pocket and the fact that she’d already died once.

Since she’d died once, she could die again. She could endure it.

“A letter for Your Highness.”

Caella looked at the silver tray the butler placed down, laden with several letters, and wondered idly just how many of those silver trays were left. The state of their silverware inventory was already shockingly dire.

“Thank you.”

How many letters could possibly be waiting for the Grand Duchess, who had only just managed to get out of bed? At most, there might be one from her father in Ostein—but there were quite a few letters here.

“Are you currently in the process of selecting a new head maid?”

Cecil and Denise immediately turned to stare sharply at the butler. That was precisely the problem with this Viscount Rolf Anderson.

A butler was supposed to remain silent until the Grand Duchess gave instructions—or, at the very least, ask extremely cautiously. Yet every time he met Caella, he kept prattling on about the head maid, acting as if he were some superior inspecting the work. Caella was so exasperated she almost wanted to crack open his head and see how he understood social hierarchy and rank.

“I haven’t forgotten.”

If she pressed him further, he’d just keep repeating the same old phrase. Besides, arguing with that ridiculous Grand Duchess would clearly lead to private retaliation anyway, so Caella was too tired to even bother responding.

They’d deliberately send in maids who kept making mistakes—or even encourage them to err—so that whenever Caella said anything, they’d burst into tears claiming they’d done their best, thereby painting Caella as the villain.

“Coincidentally, the people who sent these letters are all excellent candidates for head maid. Your Highness may use them as references when making your choice.”

“I see. You may go.”
