With an utterly ordinary face and voice so common they hardly left a memory, but upon hearing it, she understood. It was him alright—the very suspicious man who had utterly ruined Beatrice’s banquet.

She narrowed her eyes, gazing at the silhouette visible far in the distance.

While the banquet had been ruined and Beatrice disgraced in the press, and while the enormous debts of House Monde were dragged back into the spotlight, Beatrice had clenched her teeth and dug relentlessly into the trail behind this merchant guild.

Then, without further ado, he had simply sent a notice declaring his unilateral visit to the Avnero guild’s address—and arrived.

It felt like a trap that he’d waited for her in complete silence and darkness, but Beatrice was beyond caring at this point.

Her eyes, accustomed to the darkness, confirmed the familiar-yet-unfamiliar face. One by one, the dim lights flickered on. The building held nothing inside.

Beatrice stared carefully at that unremarkable yet somehow dangerous face, etching it once more into her mind. Was this man truly the head of the guild holding House Monde’s colossal debt? Or was there someone even more powerful lurking behind him?

“So, have you come to collect your debt?”

The man had previously declared he would either meet Duke Monde or refuse any meeting until a portion of the debt was repaid—but today, he was here. Thus, she decided to swallow her pride and overlook his insolent provocation, especially since his words held truth.

“While I’m at it. Isn’t there even a place to sit here?”

“Apparently not.”

For someone claiming to run a merchant guild—supposedly eager to pounce on any profitable opportunity—this man responded with utter indifference, offering not even a seat in this empty building. He clearly had no intention of basic hospitality.

“As previously notified, I’ll transfer Hillhouse to you, so put it up for auction. Once it sells, use the proceeds to settle the debt for now.”

“Very well. Though I suspect it’ll sell for less than expected. It’s become rather infamous for all the wrong reasons.”

Beatrice gritted her teeth and smiled.
