As If I've Never Loved (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 99
Captain Ansel Blaine had taken leave for the first time since being assigned to the Brighton Military Office.
However, he provided no particular reason for it.
His subordinates were thrown into confused bewilderment when Captain Blaine, the very embodiment of a workaholic, voluntarily—and quite abruptly—requested time off.
Although using one’s allocated leave did not violate any protocol, the timing could hardly have been worse.
Late the previous night, intelligence had arrived via spies that the young monarch of Malabria had gathered the chieftains of his vassal forces and delivered a speech tantamount to a declaration of war.
Thus, the two nations had finally entered a state of war.
Of course, Bert, unable to ignore the thickening war clouds, had long since completed his military deployments and, given the prolonged tension with the Empire, should have steeled himself mentally as well.
The problem lay with Wellington, their strongest ally.

A man seated at the lowest rung of the Intelligence Division muttered something rather irreverent.
Though he’d never openly shown it before, this man had always resented Ansel Blaine for achieving the rank of captain at a younger age than himself.
“After all, he’s a gentleman of refined sensibilities. As an intelligence officer, outright refusing to join the front would wound his pride—so perhaps he chose to flee before being put in a position where he’d have to reject such orders to his face.”
Naturally, no one could firmly deny that possibility.
No one truly understood the thoughts of their ever-cold, expressionless superior.
The tide shifted when Lieutenant Bruce, having received a message delivered alongside the captain’s leave application by one of his men, personally visited his residence.
