When I lifted my trembling eyelids, what filled my vision was a man sprawled at the bottom of the stairs, shards of glass scattered everywhere, and bright red blood spreading from his head, soaking into the floor.

“Oh, what… what do I…?”

At the sudden horror before me, my vision turned white. Eloise’s body collapsed limply onto the floor.

“Surely not…?”

Surely he wasn’t dead? No, it wasn’t even that high a staircase—how could that be…? Then why wasn’t he getting up? There was absolutely no movement… Wait, was that blood coming from his head?

Lost in panic, my mind brimming with anxious questions, I remained paralyzed—until a voice, sharp as a scream, shattered my daze.

“Good heavens! Aiden!”

“…Mrs. Mullichi?”

An elderly woman with stark white hair tightly coiled atop her head, contrasting sharply with her deep gray dress, came rushing over, her face ashen, toward where the man had fallen.

Perhaps it was fortunate that Mrs. Mullichi was the first to discover the scene.

While I was still lost in that thought, a guttural, ragged shriek tore savagely at Eloise’s eardrums.

“Oh, God! Aiden, my son! Open your eyes, please!”

So that man must be Mrs. Mullichi’s son—the original occupant of the second-floor room where Eloise had stayed for just over a month.

Speechless, Eloise blinked her wide blue eyes blankly, stunned by the stark contrast between the vague image she’d imagined of the woman’s son and the reality before her.

Unaware of Eloise’s presence seated helplessly by the front door, the old woman—wailing like an enraged crow—gradually calmed as she scrutinized her son inch by inch.
