The morning of the long-awaited wedding day of the Bailey family’s eldest daughter had dawned.

The capital’s morning was unusually bright, thanks to the rain having finally cleared after so long.

Eloise sincerely hoped that, by now, this same blessing of sunlight was also shining down upon the grand garden of Longfield.

Was this punishment for lying to her older sister? Ironically, Eloise had indeed fallen ill.

Yesterday, feeling utterly unlike herself, she had cautiously mentioned it to Mr. Woodley, the factory supervisor, who merely shrugged his shoulders and said, “Ah, so it’s finally come to this.”

Apparently, newcomers to the factory often fell severely ill around this time.

Mr. Woodley was unmarried and particularly lenient toward slender, youthful-looking female workers.

He only appeared at the workshop three times a day, including morning hours, and just recently, he had turned a blind eye when Eloise arrived slightly late due to mailing letters to her family.

Just yesterday, he had not only let Eloise—the newest hire, with less than a month on the job—leave first but had even granted her a full day off.

Eloise was far too perceptive to pretend she didn’t realize how unusually accommodating he was being.

Ordinarily, she would have refused out of concern that the other workers might think poorly of her.

But yesterday, she had been so unwell she couldn’t even spare a thought for anything else, and as expected, this morning she couldn’t manage to take even a single step out of bed.

“Ugh… My whole body aches.”

Eloise groaned miserably, pulling the tightly wrapped blanket up just below her eyes.

Just then, a faint sound came from outside the door. When Eloise didn’t respond, she heard scratching at the gap beneath the door.
