Eloise was dragged by the manager, her arms firmly seized, toward the crowd that had gathered.

Naturally, she didn’t even get a chance to confront the young lady, who had calmly ridden off in her carriage.

For some reason, Mr. Lylance, unusually arrogant even by his usual standards, stood before the assembled crowd at the main gate and announced with theatrical flourish,

“I hereby expose this woman’s disgraceful conduct before you all! My source is absolutely reliable!”

With that booming declaration, the accusation followed: Eloise Bailey from the poultry section was, in truth, living unmarried with a young man.

The claim that she was merely renting a room from an elderly couple had been a lie from the start; her cohabitant was allegedly an officer from the Brighton Military Office.

Though the men who had orchestrated this dramatic scene had already departed with their carriage, the crowd still surrounded Eloise like an unyielding wall.

Eloise stared blankly as expressions of shock and contempt spread across their faces.

Her mind went utterly blank, as if bleached white by sudden shock.

“How shameless! Disgusting!”

“To think I worked alongside a woman like that—I feel sick.”

“Tsk, what is this world coming to?”

The merciless torrent of condemnation rang with eerie clarity in her ears.

Every word they spat and every scornful glance struck her chest like stones.
