Ki Tae Han, age eight.

“This is my absolute favorite!”

It was Tae Wook’s birthday.

The dining room, filled with everyone, was bustling with noise.

On the table sat a sweet cake and an abundance of delicious food, and Tae Wook, wearing a party hat, was buried under a mountain of presents, giggling merrily.

“Auntie knew you’d love exactly this! Does it please our nephew?”

“Yes! I love you, Auntie!”

Amid this cheerful scene, Tae Han stared down at his cooling seaweed soup.

He was waiting for Chairman Ki Tae Sung, who had momentarily left the dining room.

Around him stood adults who had forced themselves to attend.

“Look at him—not showing his face even on his eldest son’s birthday. His eyes are glued to women’s skirts, forgetting even the duty of a father.”

“What are you saying on such a good day?”

“Precisely because it’s a good day that I say it.”

“Shh, be quiet. The child is listening.”

His aunt, noticing Tae Han too late, jabbed him in the side with her elbow as a warning, but his uncle—who rarely showed his face even once a year—spoke even louder.
