An Instinctive Proposal (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 28
Yeon Woo sat frozen in place, staring at the man before her.
Jeon Il Soo wore a calm expression.
He maintained such an arrogant look as if nothing had happened that Yeon Woo briefly wondered if she had misheard him.
“What do you mean by that?”
She asked for confirmation.
“Exactly as Seo Yeon Woo understood it.”
Jeon Il Soo stirred her emotions with his persistently curt reply, then calmly opened his bag and pulled out a brown envelope.
“Please take a look.”
Yeon Woo’s heart pounded faster as she stared down at the envelope quietly placed atop the magazine.
After taking a deep breath, she opened it.
Inside were a thin booklet and several sheets of documents.
Her fingertips trembled slightly as she took them out, but as she calmly examined the contents, her chest tightened.
The envelope contained a rough educational curriculum and the core business plans of Tae Sung Group—
a grand blueprint showing how, once born, the child would receive this education and follow this path to become a member of the group.
After a moment, a bitter laugh escaped her lips.
Just how thoroughly prepared were they before coming to find her?
She gently wrapped her arms around her lower abdomen and asked,
“You’re showing me this to suggest that the child I’ll bear can receive this education and live this kind of life, right?”
“Precisely.”
“That’s nice.”
These were conditions an ordinary person would never dare to imagine.
And that wasn’t even all—she’d be able to eat all the finest foods and experience everything she’d never known before.
She could live a life where every desire was fulfilled.
“So, what do I get out of this?”
At her follow-up question, a subtle smile flickered at the corners of Jeon Il Soo’s lips.
Perhaps he finally felt they were speaking the same language.
“Wealth. We’ll compensate you generously for giving birth to the child. We’ll fully support anything you need for daily life.”
“Even a house? Like a multi-billion-won luxury villa overlooking the Han River?”
“Yes.”
“If I asked for an expensive car and a personal chauffeur, you’d grant that too?”
“Of course.”
Only then did Yeon Woo fall silent, words failing her.
Just how valuable was this child to Tae Sung Group that they’d grant her every demand?
While she was lost in thought, Jeon Il Soo’s expression softened noticeably.
It seemed her worldly question had pleased him.
“I understand you must have a lot to consider. We don’t expect an immediate answer.”
Yet he behaved as if he’d already heard her decision.
“Once you’ve made up your mind, please contact me using this business card.”
“Wait a moment.”
But Yeon Woo couldn’t let the conversation end like this.
One crucial question remained.
“What if I reject this proposal?”
She wanted to raise her child not with the best material conditions, but with infinite love—
like her father, who never gave up teaching her to ride a bike even after she kept falling,
or her mother, who cheered her every day with her favorite meals.
She wanted to give love as naturally as breathing. To Yeon Woo, that was her child’s true meaning and worth.
“This isn’t about raising a child—it’s about grooming one.”
Jeon Il Soo’s expression visibly cooled at her words.
“You’d be better off complying.”
His tone was firm, as if the option of noncompliance had never existed.
“What I’ve shown you isn’t even everything. There’s a world beyond your imagination—a world you, Seo Yeon Woo, who grew up so ordinary, couldn’t possibly conceive of.”
Yeon Woo briefly recalled the gathering with Tae Han and Seok Chan.
Having only glimpsed that new world briefly, she now knew Jeon Il Soo wasn’t bluffing.
“You said you’d support all my living needs.”
Yet she would never, ever hand over her child.
“Doesn’t that imply I’d have to live separately from my child? That you won’t recognize me as the mother?”
Jeon Il Soo straightened his glasses, his face hardening.
“If we don’t recognize you as the mother, we won’t offer support either.”
“That’s not recognition—it’s payment. Payment calculated in exchange for offering my child to Tae Sung.”
Even if Tae Sung Group promised to raise her child into the most magnificent person in the world or offered her unimaginable wealth, she would never accept their proposal.
The rights to her child belonged solely to her as the birth mother.
“I don’t know who sent you, but please deliver this message: I’m not the kind of mother who abandons her child.”
“If you refuse, things will become dangerous in many ways.”
“I need to return to my office now, so I’ll be leaving.”
Her head throbbed.
Though she spoke boldly, Yeon Woo was so nervous her hands and feet trembled.
“Your ordered grain latte and bagel are ready for pickup!”
The staff’s voice calling her name rang out just then, but she couldn’t bring herself to go collect the food.
Clutching only her bag and the magazine, she fled the café as if running for her life.
Tae Han rested his chin on one hand, staring blankly at his monitor.
Dozens of documents awaited his review, yet not a single line registered in his mind.
Yeon Woo’s desk, which he’d assumed would be occupied, remained empty, and he’d just received the report from Sung Won regarding his recent order to investigate Choi Gyu Bin.
“Mr. Choi Gyu Bin is the CEO of a partner company in our renewable energy hub.”
It was unexpected news.
He’d assumed the man lived and worked in Cheonan since he’d abruptly moved there, but now learned he was actually CEO of a firm contracted with Tae Sung Biologics.
“Records show he lived in Cheonan long ago, but his current residence is listed as the U.S.”
Moreover, his home was in America.
“His business is also based in the U.S., so it appears he’s currently in Korea for business reasons.”
If Sung Won’s findings were accurate, it meant Seo Yeon Woo had lied to him from beginning to end.
“Why would she do that…?”
He’d never truly believed her claims about marriage or that Gyu Bin was her boyfriend.
But upon learning of her pregnancy, he’d chosen to overlook her lies—for the moment.
Whenever it came to Seo Yeon Woo, he often lost his composure; the only thing he could do was keep her from leaving.
Thus, the revealed truth struck Tae Han as a significant shock.
He was back to square one.
“You’re not suffering so much over me that you’d let go of your livelihood. You’re also good at self-awareness, so you won’t cling to false hope.”
“People will accuse me of favoritism. Some employees might even see it as discrimination.”
If it wasn’t because staying near him was painful, and not because commuting as a pregnant woman was difficult, then why did she want to resign?
Tae Han felt like he was standing before a tightly locked door, holding the wrong key.
He could order further investigation to uncover the hidden truth, but he didn’t want even Sung Won to learn about Yeon Woo’s pregnancy.
Swallowing a frustrated sigh, Tae Han glared at the innocent monitor.
And the only answer he found was this:
“Who’s the father?”
He needed to uncover who the child’s biological father was.
Tae Han remembered exactly when the night he’d spent with Yeon Woo had occurred.
Back in the office, Yeon Woo still couldn’t pull herself together.
Her mind was so crowded with thoughts of meeting Jeon Il Soo that she couldn’t even recall how she’d returned to the office.
“If it’s Chairman Ki Tae Han’s child, please go ahead and have it.”
Only now did she regret not insisting it was another man’s child.
Perhaps it was because she’d never seriously considered not having the baby.
His domineering attitude—acting as if he knew everything—had clouded her judgment.
Even now, her heart raced at the thought of how easily she’d been swept up in it all.
‘If the Chairman finds out too…’
Her anxiety wasn’t from fear of his threats.
It was the dread that Tae Han might discover what even Tae Sung Group already knew.
The man who kept her close not for fantasy romance but for real reasons now genuinely found her resignation letter infuriating.
“I already told you—that night was just a mistake.”
But what would happen if she confessed that a child had resulted from that supposedly accidental night?
His reaction was all too predictable.
She’d be lucky if he didn’t outright tell her to get rid of it.
“…Ugh.”
Yeon Woo sighed deeply, unable to stop the endless chain of thoughts swirling in her head.
Just as she stood to get some cold water, her eyes fell on her bag carelessly left on the floor.
‘Ugh, look at me—what a mess.’
The open bag revealed the magazine inside clearly.
Hastily shoving it into the cabinet, Yeon Woo suddenly froze at something she spotted.
A white paper was tucked inside the magazine. Carefully pulling it out, she found a business card embossed with Tae Sung Group’s logo.
CEO Jeon Il Soo.
Biting her lip hard, Yeon Woo pushed the card back deep into the magazine.
On her way back from the break room after getting water, she saw Sung Won waving at her.
Sure enough, as she approached, he informed her that Tae Han wanted to see her.
“Go in now.”
Her heart lurched.
Surely Jeon Il Soo hadn’t already told him everything while she was returning to the office?
Seeing Yeon Woo pale and dazed, Sung Won cautiously asked,
“By the way, Yeon Woo, did something happen between you and the Chairman?”
She felt the nearby colleagues’ eyes quietly shift toward her.
“No.”
She barely managed a reply through dry lips. Sung Won tilted his head, puzzled, then gestured for her to go in.
Yeon Woo carefully composed her expression to appear unaffected and headed toward the CEO’s office.
Knock knock.
After knocking and silently counting to herself, she opened the door.
Her mind was so chaotic by the time she saw Tae Han’s face that it felt like her head might burst.
If he discovered Tteun Tteun’s true origins and tried to exert his influence, what should she do?
“Secretary Seo.”
But his voice calling her name sounded calm.
When Yeon Woo slowly raised her head, she saw Tae Han standing up from his seat.
“What are you doing? Sit down.”
Thankfully, he seemed unaware of the truth yet.
Only then did Yeon Woo let out a sigh of relief and walked over to sit on the sofa. In that brief moment, her palms had grown damp with anxiety.
“There’s something I want to ask you—please answer honestly.”
Tae Han seemed genuinely eager to know something.
As Yeon Woo nervously swallowed, he fell uncharacteristically silent for a moment before finally looking straight at her.
“About the child.”
Hearing his purpose spoken aloud, Yeon Woo unconsciously straightened her back.
The pause before his next words felt agonizingly long.
“How far along are you?”
