They simply stared at each other in silence, and the carriage fell quiet once more.
Transparent sunlight seeped into the stillness—onto her pale face powdered white, onto the violet-shadowed hollows beneath her eyes, onto her lips crusted dry with blood.
Even in that wretched state, the woman was beautiful. Edgar suddenly felt an impulse to tear off his absurd hat.
He loosened his constricting tie. Perhaps it was the premature heat of late spring, but he felt parched.
“Mr. Lancelot.”
Taking his prolonged silence as rejection, the woman called out to him anxiously. It would have sounded far more pleasing if she’d sounded just a little more desperate.
“Edgar.”
Barely managing to feign composure, Edgar slowly uttered his own name.
“That’s enough. Edgar.”
Her incongruously crimson lips closed. Outside the window, the scenery shifted.
Having slipped free from the tall buildings, the carriage now sped across the park. At that moment, those red lips parted cautiously.
“…Edgar.”
He liked the way she spoke his name.
“Speak.”
Edgar’s lips curved into a long, slow smile.
