An Incomplete Divorce (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 141
Maurice entered the office and cautiously stepped forward, observing the mood.
Was there something you needed?
Yesterday, he had savored the sweetness of vacation for the first time in a long while.
Having struggled to peel himself off the bed—where his back seemed permanently glued—Maurice arrived at work and sensed something strange in the air.
Unaware of the commotion from the previous night, he assumed the chilly atmosphere in the office was merely the lingering aftermath of yet another recent marital quarrel.
“Here’s the report that needs your review by this morning.”
Maurice bowed respectfully and placed a thick stack of documents for approval squarely in the center of the desk, then stepped back a good distance.
Johann, who had been sitting loosely, straightened his posture. Rubbing his fingertips over the still-faint redness beneath his eyes, he began reviewing the documents.
After signing the last page and closing the file, Johann opened a silver cigarette case.
Tilting his head slightly, he lit the end of the cigarette gently pressed to his lips and softly called out to Maurice.
“Maurice.”
“Yes, sir.”
After letting a long, hazy plume of smoke drift away until it nearly faded, he gave his order.
“Investigate the personal details of every servant employed at Greathill. Everything—except their letters of recommendation.”
His quiet voice rumbled low through the office, bathed in the golden hues of sunset.
