Johann was informed that his wife had decided to skip dinner and go straight to bed.

Respecting her wishes, Johann prepared for bed himself. Through the loosely worn robe, the bandage wrapped tightly across his firm chest was visible.

“Can’t you just stay and sleep? Stay and sleep, Johann.”

Johann walked down the long corridor toward his wife’s bedroom. The sound of his cane tapping against the marble floor echoed through Great Hill as night fell.

The west-end room and the east-end room of the mansion—the usual, unremarkable locations of the couple’s bedrooms—prompted a muttered curse.

Johann arrived at the bedroom door and knocked. There was no reply from the other side. He slowly opened the door.

Inside the room, unnervingly quiet, the only light came from the dim moonlight seeping through the balcony window.

Johann’s gaze, as he surveyed the room, shifted toward the bathroom from which the sound of water could be heard.

Only then did Johann let out a faint, wry chuckle. He turned on the bedside lamp, leaned his cane at an angle against the bed, and settled back against the headboard.

Though he knew he couldn’t expect a passionate night, the faint sound of splashing water made Johann sigh softly and close his eyes.

And shortly afterward, at last, the sound of the bathroom door opening came.

Olivia blinked slowly, struggling to make sense of this awkward situation.

Though it was plainly obvious what the man lying in her bed in the dead of night intended—so obvious that such interpretation felt unnecessary—

“If my bedroom hasn’t changed, then it seems you’ve entered the wrong room. Which is it?”

As Olivia calmly asked the question, she felt Johann’s gaze slowly slide from her face down her neck and linger somewhere.
