“Can I have one last cigarette?”
He brushed back the hair that had fallen over his forehead and showed his empty hands. Three gun barrels relentlessly tracked his every movement.
“We’re not sworn enemies—surely you can spare that much mercy.”
“If you try anything funny, I’ll shoot you dead on the spot.”
The thug repositioned his gun, finger already on the trigger.
Johann reached into his breast pocket with an impassive expression. In the suffocating silence, a silver cigarette case appeared in his hand.
Click. The metallic sound of the lid opening echoed as Johann plucked a cigarette and placed it between his lips. Still locking eyes with the thug, he reached into his chest again.
“Would someone lend me a light?”
The thug at the front gestured for him to come closer.
As steady footsteps approached, the snipers behind slowly shifted their aim to follow him.
The thug temporarily slung his rifle over his shoulder and struck a match. The tiny flame flickered perilously in the sea breeze, threatening to go out.
Shielding the flame with his hand, the man leaned toward Johann.
In an instant, Johann’s eyes changed—the next moment, his arm snapped around the man’s neck, twisting it violently. Simultaneously, he drew his revolver and fired at the other two.
“Run!”
Bang! Johann shouted as he used the now-neck-broken thug as a shield and fired.
