The ship from Le Mont reached its destination in ten hours. It was about the time when the setting sun began to dye the sea in a brilliant red hue.

The dusky twilight, the lively hustle, the jumbled cacophony of voices. The capital of the Kingdom of Britt unfolded before Olivia and Anne, standing on the deck.

“Look, Anne. That’s Litten!”

Holding down her fluttering bonnet in the sea breeze, Olivia shouted excitedly. Anne followed the direction of her slender pointing finger.

Far away, Litten’s famous clock tower, brightly illuminated, caught their eyes.

Olivia’s gaze mixed with anticipation and curiosity as the city drew closer.

Her heart raced. Opening her eyes to a new world after believing she was dead. Unknowingly, she was in the typical romantic fantasy world she had been reading about.

There, she was Olivia Blanchett, the despised illegitimate child of a count’s house, and the nominal wife of the noble Johann Leopold.

Jian remembered the name of that woman.

A woman blinded by jealousy. Pitiable and foolish.

In the original story, Olivia Blanchett, who never knew love, met her demise, clinging foolishly to a twisted emotion that couldn’t even be called affection.

‘Olivia Blanchett is sentenced to death for the attempted murder of Clara Sinclair and the solicitation of the murders of Diane Brook and Matilda Fairbanks.’

So, she decided.

This time, she would survive.

Olivia tightly grasped the handle of her trunk, gazing at the city bathed in sunset.

A second chance at life.

As the disembarking passengers left the ship, customs officers swarmed around them.

A boy in a newsboy cap swiftly approached Olivia and Anne, deftly taking their travel bags.

“Right this way, ladies.”

Hastily following the swiftly disappearing boy, the two women trotted along.

Reaching the line of carriages, a fair distance from the dock, Olivia and Anne caught their breath, their faces flushed.

“Enjoy your trip! That’ll be one penny.”

The boy cheerfully said in a clear voice.

“Thank you. May you also have a delightful day.”

Olivia, her cheeks tinged with a gentle red, smiled and placed two banknotes in the boy’s palm.

“You’ve given me one extra.”

Wiping the sweat from his forehead, the boy extended one penny back to her.

“There were two bags.”

Realizing, the boy shyly smiled, carefully folded the banknotes, and put them into his inner pocket, then dashed back into the crowd.

As the porter boy disappeared from sight, Olivia turned to the coachman, unaware of Anne’s widened eyes.

“Ready to leave?”

“We need a full carriage to go.”

Olivia made an offer as the coachman loaded their bags, speaking indifferently.

“How much for a full carriage? I’ll pay double. I’m tired and want to get to the hotel quickly.”

With a soft smile, Olivia’s words prompted the coachman to gladly open the carriage door.

“Where to?”

“The Lancelot Hotel, please.”

The carriage soon departed, and Anne silently watched Olivia, who sat opposite her.

Like on the ship’s deck, Olivia still seemed lost, gazing out the window.

As the sun cast its fading light on Litten’s harbor, which gradually receded, she never took her eyes off the window.

Anne knew that her lady had never handled money before.
Confined in the Count’s house, she never needed money, and after marrying Duke Johann Leopold, her expenses were handled by the secretary appointed by the Duke, who issued cheques to merchants for all her spendings.

Hence, Anne couldn’t help but be surprised at her lady’s natural actions a moment ago.

Paying the porter boy and bargaining with the coachman, all were actions far from the lady she knew.

Yet, Anne felt a sense of relief mixed with anxiety at such utterly human, ordinary behavior. It reminded her of the saying that people change before death.

Anne quickly shook her head to dispel the ominous thought.

Arriving at the hotel, the two, fatigued from their journey, prepared to sleep right after dinner.

Anne, having changed Olivia into her nightgown, carefully brushed her lady’s luscious brown hair and tied it neatly.

Olivia snuggled into the cozy bed. After finishing her evening prayers, Anne lay down beside her.

“Good night, Anne.”

Olivia’s voice was already drowsy and dreamy.

“Have sweet dreams, my lady.”

Anne whispered softly.

It would have been scandalous in the eyes of Anne’s mother, who once was the head housemaid at the Count’s house, but since her mother was no longer there, Anne decided not to worry about it.

On rainy days, the lady who miraculously survived after falling into a lake, would have nightmares. Rushing to her screams, Anne would find her drenched in sweat.

“Anne, will you sleep with me?”

The desperate plea in her pale voice was impossible to refuse. Thus, the two ended up sleeping in the same bed.

How long had they slept when the fragrance of flowers from the hotel garden wafted in through the open window, bringing the tender breeze of dawn with it? Olivia slowly opened her eyes to the caress of the wind on her cheek.
