“Yeah. I see them.”

I replied, watching the two of them walking toward us from a distance.

I briefly considered comforting Lee Ha Ru, who was staring at me with a tearful expression, but then realized that her current mood was precisely because of those two—so that wouldn’t solve anything.

“They’re getting closer. What should I do?”

“You know, Ha Ru, you could still ditch me and leave right now. Oh, but then who’d drive?”

“Are you serious right now?”

“Of course not. I was just throwing it out there.”

My attempt to ease her tension—by jokingly implying she could abandon me—seemed to backfire instead, given her expression, as if she might burst into tears any second. I could feel Ha Ru’s breathing growing quicker.

“It’s fine. It’s not like liking you is a crime.”

Ha Ru shot me a look that clearly said, “Is that seriously all you have to say right now?” I let out a small, resigned chuckle. The two had now closed the distance enough that even our quiet whispers would be audible.

I wasn’t sure if it was just my imagination, but I thought I glimpsed a flicker of understanding in Ji Hoon’s eyes as they briefly swept over my school uniform—like he’d just pieced together what was going on.

Of course, it lasted only an instant. His expression immediately blanked out, and I could practically feel the composure he’d been so carefully maintaining begin to waver.

Hyun Su already knew about our relationship, so the only one left was Ji Hoon. No—of all people, it had to be Ji Hoon.

“They said Director Kim and Writer Lee’s accommodations are right ahead, so I guess you two came out for a quick seaside walk? The weather’s so nice—you probably didn’t want to let a day like this go to waste.”
