Ha Ru had been silent the whole time—throughout the entire elevator ride up. She must have felt my gaze on her, yet she didn’t lift her head even once.

I could sense the emotions welling up inside her chest. Out of pity, I almost immediately wanted to wrap my arms around your shoulders, but I held back.

Even after we entered the apartment, you still only showed me your back, clearly wracked with guilt and remorse. I couldn’t help but wonder how you’d managed to send that message—so resolute, leaving no room for doubt, declaring you wanted to break up.

Ha Ru stepped halfway into the room, put some distance between us, then pointed toward the sofa and spoke.

“Sit down if you want to sit.”

“Where are you going to sit? Are you going to sit far away again?”

Frustration crept into my tone, making it sound sharp. Maybe it backfired—because I could feel Ha Ru flinch slightly.

Sigh. I honestly had no idea where to even begin, or what to say first.

With no other choice, I sat down on the single-seat sofa. As if she’d been waiting for that, Ha Ru immediately perched herself on the very edge of the long sofa right beside it. Seizing the moment, I scooted right next to you. You quickly turned your head away toward the opposite side, and a soft sigh escaped your lips.

You kept doing this over and over. It made my chest ache.

“I’ve read your message several times already, yet I still couldn’t believe it. Were you serious about what you texted me today? That you wanted to break up with me?”

“Yes… I was serious.”

She spoke without even looking at me—in a voice so quiet I could barely hear it unless I leaned in closely.

“I didn’t hear you clearly.”

“…I said I was serious.”
