I woke up to the unwelcome sound of the doorbell. As soon as my eyes opened, the thoughts that had filled my mind last night began creeping back in again. The bell sounded annoyingly persistent.

Because of it, I was forced to think about parting with Jun even earlier today.

I fumbled around under the blanket in my bed. Pulling out a square, hard object from beneath the covers made the ringing clearer.

The moment I saw Jun’s name neatly displayed on the screen, a cold gust seemed to sweep through my chest. It was the very name I’d most wanted to avoid today—but also the one I absolutely had to face.

Jun had planned to say goodbye only after finishing his entire schedule. He didn’t want his plans disrupted because of me. So right now, I had no valid excuse to avoid his call.

My hesitant hand pressed the green button. Immediately, Jun’s voice filled my ear as the call connected.

[Where are you right now?]

I could tell just from his voice—he sounded a little annoyed at me for disappearing alone last night.

“I’m at home now.”

Truthfully, what Jun had really wanted to ask wasn’t where I physically was, but why I was there. So my reply was deliberately evasive—brazen, even. That’s why my words came out barely above a whisper, despite my bold phrasing.

[Sigh… What if something had happened to you going out alone so early in the morning? I was worried.]

But Jun’s anger came from a different reason than I’d assumed. My chest tightened painfully—it was an emotion I shouldn’t have let show. I quickly forced myself to sound calm.

“Oh, I was just anxious thinking about work tomorrow. Sorry—I figured you were sleeping so deeply.”

In that moment, I offered a plausible excuse with convincing ease.
