Jae In perfectly timed her move, bowing her head just enough to thrust forward the ponytail she’d tied up high.

Back when she worked part-time at a café in the U.S., a pregnant woman once walked in and grabbed Jae In’s hair. The woman—shouting the name of some man Jae In didn’t even know—accused her of seducing her husband and flew into a hysterical rage.

In that moment, as her hair was being yanked out, Jae In realized something: it hurt far less to just hand over the whole ponytail than to endure the clumsy tugging of a few strands—and fewer hairs actually got pulled out that way.

Just then, a hand as tough and wiry as a dry tree root seized Jae In’s neatly gathered ponytail.

“KYAAAAAH!”

Jae In screamed deliberately at the top of her lungs while quickly checking Sang Hwa’s position.

True to form—having grown close to Jae In and witnessed this exact scenario many times before—Sang Hwa calmly pulled out her phone and started recording video evidence.

That was enough.

Jae In swayed along with Gwang Soon’s tugging.

In truth, she exaggerated even more, flailing her body dramatically in every direction, pretending she couldn’t control herself against Gwang Soon’s strength and letting out loud cries.

“Why are you doing this!”

“Why? Why are you acting like this? People who never learned proper manners always show it! No parents to raise you, dropped out of college—figures!”

“Please stop! Ow! Stop it, just stop!”

Jae In flailed her arms as if trying to hold Gwang Soon back.

While pretending to defend herself, she clamped her hand around Gwang Soon’s wrist—the one gripping her hair.

“You look sweet as honey, but how dare you try playing the seductress with someone like me, huh?”

“It hurts! It really hurts! Madam, please, just stop….”

Thrilled at having finally suppressed that wretched girl’s spirit, Gwang Soon didn’t even notice her own sleeve tearing off in Jae In’s resistance. She also failed to see her beloved pearl necklace snapping and scattering across the floor.

Besides, Gwang Soon never exercised. Her exaggerated thrashing and shouting left her hair completely disheveled, and her once shrill voice grew hoarse and raspy.

Driven solely by devotion to her son, she’d cast aside all decorum for the first time—but she had no idea that her uncontrolled rage would leave her aching with muscle pain by tonight.

“What do we do? What do we do?”

“Shouldn’t we call the police?”

“I already did! They said they’ll be here soon!”

Amid Gwang Soon’s frenzy, murmurs from the yoga studio members filled the air. Jae In clenched her teeth, endured the pain, and closed her eyes.

Just a little longer. Hold on just a bit more until the officers arrive.

But Gwang Soon clearly had no talent for fighting. Exhausted, she lost her grip on Jae In’s ponytail, which she’d been shaking so vigorously. At that instant, Jae In dramatically collapsed with a loud crash, rolling away as if flung.

It wasn’t that Gwang Soon had thrown her—it was Jae In’s own doing, subtly using her feet to slide farther away while pretending to lose balance.

“KYAAAH!”

“Jae In! Are you okay?”

Right on cue, Sang Hwa rushed over to Jae In.

There was already enough video proof showing Jae In hadn’t done anything wrong—that she’d remained polite the whole time and only tried to defend herself against an unprovoked assault.

As Sang Hwa shot Gwang Soon a sharp glare and helped the fallen Jae In up, Jae In winced.

“What’s wrong? Jae In, are you hurt somewhere?”

Sang Hwa pretended to smooth Jae In’s messy hair—now even more tangled—while genuinely worrying she might have gotten injured after seeing how fiercely Gwang Soon had attacked, despite Jae In’s Hollywood-worthy fall.

Jae In was perfectly fine. Years of dance and yoga had strengthened her body thoroughly. Thanks to her practiced fall, not a single part of her body was hurt—but she clutched her elbow anyway.

“Oh! I think… I think I sprained my elbow ligament….”

“Does it hurt? Let me see.”

“Huh… hnngh….”

“That bad? Did you break your arm?”

Startled by Sang Hwa’s dramatic reaction, Gwang Soon—who’d been gathering her scattered pearls from the floor—gaped with wide eyes.

“What nonsense is this! When did I ever break your arm!”

“Madam! Why are you doing this! Coming here during class and accusing me with no basis—I could even sue you for disrupting business!”

Blocking the half-reclining Jae In, Sang Hwa’s sharp retort sent Gwang Soon into another furious rage.

“Ha! Disrupting business? Go ahead and sue! Who’s stopping you? You ignorant, uneducated trash! Acting like you’ve got lawyers on retainer when you can barely afford rice!”

“That’s really too much—Jae In! Jae In!”

Spotting three approaching police officers behind the ranting Gwang Soon, Jae In simply collapsed onto the floor.

Her scalp stung where her hair had been pulled—but aside from being thoroughly disheveled, she was fine. Fortunately, thanks to her neat, tight ponytail, barely any hair had actually been torn out.

While Sang Hwa frantically dialed 119 and numerous members eagerly volunteered as witnesses to the police, Jae In calmly closed her eyes and relaxed her body.

Only now did Gwang Soon grasp the situation—and noticed both sleeves of her beloved fur coat had ripped clean off, leaving them tattered. Just as she clicked her tongue and reached down to pick up one detached sleeve—

She suddenly looked up at the group now blocking her path. For the first time, she saw two stern-faced police officers staring directly at her.

“Well, I mean….”

Feeling the crowd’s collective disgust in their gazes, her mouth shut involuntarily.

Suddenly, fear gripped her. Panic set in.

Her cloudy eyes lost focus, wavering with nowhere to go.

“How can you manage classes all by yourself?”

“I posted a hiring notice.”

“I’m sorry.”

“We were already thinking of hiring someone else anyway—not like it could ever work with just the two of us.”

“That’s true.”

“Being pretty really is a curse—I’ve felt that way watching you for eight years now. Honestly, I thank Madam Bae every day for giving me such an ordinary face. Hey, you should eat too. These are insanely sweet.”

Sang Hwa, peeling a tangerine beside Jae In, held out a few segments. Jae In, leaning back against the hospital bed, chuckled softly and took them.

“I guess I’ve got a knack for this. Didn’t I fall pretty naturally, in your opinion?”

“What good is having a talent for that? Planning insurance fraud next? Or are you thinking of using your looks to turn to a life of crime?”

“Seriously, I just want to live quietly.”

“But the world won’t let you? You know that’s a classic criminal excuse, right?”

Jae In nodded, and Sang Hwa burst out laughing.

“Still, I’m not going to press charges.”

“Why not? You could use this as leverage to squeeze a huge settlement out of her—enough to scare that old lady off for good!”

“That’d make me sound like an actual criminal.”

“Yeah, that’s true too.”

“I wasn’t really badly hurt. And she’s old. I just don’t want to waste my time and energy on someone like her. After going through this a few times, I’ve learned the best response is no response at all.”

Watching Jae In—who’d made up her mind to show mercy—Sang Hwa let out a mock groan and handed her one more tangerine, her favorite gesture toward her dearest friend.

“Fine. Do what feels right to you. The police said as much too—since the witnesses and evidence are solid, you won’t need to say anything. They’ll visit tomorrow just to ask routine questions, but it’s all just formality.”

“Mm.”

“They say that old lady claimed she was the victim too—she even faked fainting at the station.”

“Was she actually unconscious?”

“No, apparently not. The moment her precious son showed up, she jumped right up and started crying, saying how unfairly she’d been treated—claiming that someone as refined and kind as her ended up at the police station because of conniving fraudsters. If she pulls that ‘refined’ act one more time, they’ll really arrest our Jae In. Right?”

Jae In shuddered, recalling yesterday’s events.

Honestly, maybe I should just hold a ritual to cleanse this mess.

She’d kept smiling and acted unfazed in front of Sang Hwa—but Jae In was utterly sick and tired of situations like this.

Executive Director Jang stared blankly at Tae Seo, who was roaring with laughter.

Was it really that funny?

He’d already flipped back to the same passage and laughed out loud three times now.

“Managing Director, this really isn’t something to laugh about.”

“Not funny? I’m losing my mind! Especially this part—where the aggressor, looking even more disheveled than the victim, bursts into tears upon seeing her son.”

Tae Seo was reading the second report Executive Director Jang had handed him. It detailed the entire farce at the yoga studio.

It also stated that Yoon Jae In was now hospitalized, and the aggressor—her head wrapped in bandages—was currently under police investigation.

“Ah, my fiancée’s got quite the character. That’s exactly why I like her even more.”

“…Did you just say ‘fiancée’?”

“Everyone in this industry knows my fiancée is Jo Dae Hoon’s daughter from Hyun Yang Construction. You must’ve uncovered that during your investigation—so you know exactly who my real fiancée is.”

Executive Director Jang stayed silent.

Her findings confirmed Yoon Jae In was indeed Jo Dae Hoon’s daughter—the eldest one at that. And the more Jo Dae Hoon was scrutinized, the clearer it became that he was a ruthless, heartless man.

“Do you truly see her as your fiancée? Because right now, Hyun Yang Construction hardly seems a suitable match for your marriage—”

“I know. It’s a complete disaster.”

Calling Jae In his fiancée was just a playful nickname.

More importantly, Tae Seo had no intention of marrying anytime soon—especially not to fulfill some prearranged promise made between chairmen before Jae In was even born. He had no plans to honor it.

He was someone who meticulously calculated every gain and loss. There was no way he’d board a sinking ship like Hyun Yang—or even consider salvaging it.

Yet learning more about Yoon Jae In was genuinely enjoyable. He loved how she shut down men who couldn’t read the room, how satisfying it was to watch her deliver ice-cold comebacks to pretentious fools.

“But why….”

“Who knows? I just feel like it. How do you think the lawsuit will proceed?”

“She seems inclined to show leniency.”

“Hmm. That doesn’t sit well with me. My fiancée is far too forgiving.”

“Well, considering the aggressor’s age…”

“If we keep excusing people just because of their age, our prisons will be empty. When you do something wrong, you face the consequences.”

Having said that, Tae Seo stood up. He slipped on a sleek, brand-new black long coat—bought in a hurry at the department store days ago—and fastened his leather gloves. A silver P-brand watch gleamed on his wrist.

“You have dinner scheduled with Cha Seon Woong, CEO of Kang Seon Commerce, in one hour. Are you leaving already?”

Cha Seon Woong, CEO of Kang Seon Chemical, was the adoptive father of Cha Mu Young—Tae Seo’s younger half-brother. Though technically adoptive father and son, they were actually uncle and nephew, and their family history was straight out of a melodramatic soap opera.

“Why does he keep asking me to eat with him? You know as well as I do that I’m not on eating terms with that man. I’m not going.”

“Then where are you…?”

After checking his perfectly tailored outfit—as always—Tae Seo gave a charming smile.

“Do I look… decent enough?”

Every time he winked one eye shut like that, it felt like a real wink. Executive Director Jang, momentarily dazed, simply nodded.

“Good. It’s my first time meeting my fiancée, so I’m a bit nervous.”

“Huh…?”

“She’s at the hospital—I should at least check if she’s okay. Plus, I need to congratulate her on her victory.”

“Managing Director!”

“Executive Director Jang, don’t forget to hit the gym after work. Don’t let overtime just drain you—keep it reasonable. I’m heading out first.”

Watching Tae Seo’s effortlessly cool figure disappear down the hall, Executive Director Jang let out a long sigh.

“Did I really pick the right side…?”

Her muttered words carried not anxiety over her own future—but the uneasy feeling of having released a wild predator into a pen of herbivores.

In her mind, there was no doubt Yoon Jae In wasn’t a carnivore. Jae In was a clever, beautiful herbivore—perhaps a spotted deer, if she had to choose.

Just a deer with enough spirit to deliver a knockout kick the moment a predator let its guard down—and then escape.
