From the other end of the receiver came Shin Jae’s sharp rebuke, but Tae Seo didn’t let even a single breath falter. He’d anticipated the chairman’s fury the moment he decided not to participate in the bidding for the Hwami Apartment redevelopment and the surrounding area.

That morning, Tae Seo had officially announced that Kang Seon Construction wouldn’t take part in the bidding.

Since he held full authority over this project, Tae Seo had made and executed the decision without seeking approval from higher-ups. Naturally, the atmosphere at Kang Seon Construction instantly turned as fragile as thin ice.

“If you’re going to handle things like this, you’d better just hand over your managing director position.”

Tae Seo let out a quiet chuckle at the expected demand to relinquish his post. It wasn’t just about stepping down as managing director—they probably wished they could ship him off to some invisible corner of the world, whether America or Britain.

He’d never wanted the managing director role to begin with. Right after being appointed, he’d immediately received orders from the chairman to belatedly join the Gangnam redevelopment project.

It made no sense. Redevelopment projects typically required tearing everything down and rebuilding from scratch, which multiplied costs several times over.

Moreover, material prices were skyrocketing globally. And this was Gangnam—the prime real estate. When you factored in the costs of negotiating with existing residents, the project was clearly headed for a loss.

Kang Seon Construction, a company that had built roads and landmarks worldwide and spearheaded new city developments, had no reason to take on a guaranteed deficit.

“If you knew you couldn’t handle it, you should’ve said so from the start! The construction company selection is tomorrow—why announce your withdrawal from bidding now!”

Would they have accepted it if he’d said no from the beginning? No. In the end, it was just another excuse to find fault.

Whether or not Kangnam’s redevelopment bid succeeded, it was an opportunity to blame Tae Seo, the person in charge. Shin Jae was simply bothered by having Kang Tae Seo—someone who looked so much like himself—close by.

News of the withdrawal spread rapidly the moment the announcement was made. Tae Seo figured he’d likely be summoned to the chairman’s office soon.

Of course, as the responsible party, he’d be called in. But judging by the fact that his father had called him instead, it seemed he’d rather avoid seeing Tae Seo in person—his anger over the disrupted deal apparently outweighed by something deeper.
