“I really must’ve walked straight into the tiger’s den.”

Jae In pulled her legs in close, sitting on the sofa in the first-floor living room.

“…Be sure to lock the cat-proof gate on the stairs leading up to the second floor before you sleep.”

“Oh, if it’s because of the cat, don’t worry. I’ll lock it properly.”

“No. I’m worried I might come upstairs.”

“…”

“Worried I might wake you up, Jae In.”

“…”

“And worried I might keep you up all night, tormenting you.”

Remembering the conversation they’d had right before Tae Seo left, right at the front door, Jae In felt her breath catch in her throat. She pressed her flushed cheek against her drawn-up knees, waiting for the heat in her face to cool as she focused on breathing evenly. Only then, belatedly, did the distinctive look of the living room finally register in her eyes.

The living room wasn’t especially large. She’d expected a rather empty, sparse feel—after all, it was just a man living alone—but the space felt cozy, decorated with lamps placed throughout and travel souvenirs that seemed personally collected by Tae Seo himself.

Jae In stood up, still cupping her reddened cheeks in her hands. She didn’t dare open the door to the first-floor bedroom where he’d be sleeping. Glancing around the small kitchen tucked away in the back of the living room, she spotted stairs adjacent to the bedroom.

There were stairs going down—and stairs going up. Apparently, the house even had a basement.

She hadn’t gotten the chance to properly look at the house’s exterior when she’d arrived in the middle of the night. After a brief hesitation, Jae In climbed the stairs leading up to the second floor, where she’d be staying. Though she was curious about every nook and cranny of Kang Tae Seo’s home, she decided it would be best to tour the house properly only once Tae Seo was back.

“So this is the gate between the first and second floors they mentioned?”
