“Why! Why are you telling me to hold back!”

Yuri shouted toward the tightly shut door as if in a final fit of desperation. The cup she’d been holding rolled across the rug.

Unable to contain her frustration, Yuri finally passed out drunk just before dawn. As soon as she woke up well past noon, she planned to call her dad and demand he get rid of Yoon Jae In.

But Seung Hee knocked on Yuri’s door first. Without any preamble, she told Yuri to act as if she knew nothing about Yoon Jae In and Kang Tae Seo—and to keep her mouth shut. Yuri protested furiously, but Seung Hee was oddly stubborn.

“After all, you’re the one who’ll become the Kang Sun Group chairman’s daughter-in-law. Yoon Jae In is just someone Tae Seo is keeping around briefly before marriage….”

“I don’t care! I hate that he’s keeping her around at all!”

“He’s just momentarily taken by that pretty face. Once Tae Seo’s interest starts to wane, I’ll send that girl off to the U.S.—okay?”

“No. What’s Dad been doing all this time if he hasn’t gotten rid of her yet? I’m calling him right now to make him do it.”

“No!”

Seung Hee shoved Yuri back onto the bed just as she tried to stand up. Yuri’s eyes widened in shock at her mother’s unexpected strength. Her mother, always so elegant, had never once used physical force on her.

“Mom…?”

“No. If I say no, then it’s no. Keep your mouth shut with your dad too.”

“Why? Why not? You know exactly what I’ve been through! Are you seriously telling me to just let it go?”

“Do you think I’ve spent my whole life with your dad seeing only the good things? Sometimes you have to pretend you didn’t see or hear something—you just have to let it pass.”

Her mother had never refused her anything before. But today felt strangely different. Seung Hee’s insistence that she endure and swallow her anger felt oddly forceful—but Yuri just pouted with flushed cheeks, overwhelmed by hurt.
