Jae In’s face brightened as she checked her phone screen. Seeing a smile spread across her dear friend’s face, Sang Hwa stood up.

“Jae In, let’s have dinner a bit later. I’ll just cover it up—we can reheat it. I’m going back in to sleep a little longer. Don’t worry about me.”

Jae In, about to take the call, glanced at Sang Hwa’s face as she headed back upstairs to the guest room and burst out laughing.

Sang Hwa had already slept plenty and fully adjusted to the time difference. Yet here she was, looking fresh-faced, claiming she needed more sleep. Knowing it was simply Sang Hwa’s thoughtful way of giving her space to talk freely, Jae In settled onto the living room sofa and answered the phone.

“Yeah, Tae Seo.”

Through the passing of several seasons, Tae Seo had never once broken a promise to Jae In—not even once. He had kept his word about calling her every day.

He had been swamped to the point of exhaustion, stabilizing the Kang Seon Group, which had fallen into chaos after the chairman’s death followed by Director Im Hong Jin’s collapse.

Because of that, neither had he been able to come to Chicago, nor had Jae In returned to Korea to see him. Instead, Tae Seo called her every morning and evening without fail.

—I tried to treat it as somewhere completely unrelated to me, refusing to form any attachment at all.

He was the one who’d let go of his son’s position without hesitation, determined not to cling to the world Kang Shin Jae had built.

He had turned away from Kang Shin Jae’s tempting offers regarding the Kang Seon Group, preparing to relinquish everything—yet never imagined he’d end up shouldering it all entirely himself.

“Hmm…”
