“I just got word that Jung Jae Hoon is at the hospital.”

“…Why is he at the hospital?”

“They said he didn’t die. Unfortunately.”

Caught completely off guard, Jae In stared up at Tae Seo with wide, sleep-fleeing eyes. But Tae Seo, who had just delivered such grim news, simply smiled as if posing for a painting.

“After visiting the hospital, I think I’ll wrap up my life here in Korea.”

Jae In silently gazed at the man smiling gently at her. Only then did she realize he was grieving.

Unlike her, who had arrived with no expectations whatsoever, he had come hoping—however faintly—that things might improve with his birth father, only to end up severing that relationship entirely. The bitterness in Jae In’s mouth grew as she imagined just how crushing that disappointment must be.

Remembering tonight’s events, tears welled up uncontrollably. She’d resolved so firmly not to cry, knowing he was holding back his own tears too—but the more she thought about it, the more her heart ached.

This man, so precious to her, had been dismissed by Chairman Kang Shin Jae as if it were only natural. The ease of that dismissal made her shudder, imagining the cruel neglect Tae Seo must have endured all these years. And seeing him so nonchalantly ready to resort to violence—that had shocked her deeply.

“Why that look on your face?”

“…I’m just sad.”

Tae Seo didn’t ask Jae In what exactly was making her sad. He probably understood. Jae In opened her arms and pulled him in as he pressed his nose against her neck like a child. He loved burying his face in her skin, claiming she felt warmer than usual after waking.

“Crying on my behalf?”

“Yeah.”
