When I saw Kang Si Hoon and his family again after two years, I thought my memories would come flooding back. But nothing came to mind at all.

Even so, recalling the past always made me feel choked up, so I expected my heart to plummet like it was falling off a cliff when I saw Si Hoon. But surprisingly, I felt completely fine.

Chairman Kang acted as if he didn’t care about the past at all, saying we should forget what happened and instead celebrate this new relationship.

Kang Si Hoon looked displeased but silently held his place at the formal meeting between our families.

Since we had once nearly gotten married, I understood why he was giving me that disapproving look.

By the time we finished unpacking and the moving crew left, the sun was already setting.

Even though I knew nothing would happen, I couldn’t help but feel nervous at the thought of living with Min Hyuk, my new husband.

As soon as Da Hyun opened the door visible right after climbing to the second floor, she stepped backward upon seeing the king-size bed.

At a glance, it was clearly big enough for two people. Seeing this private space meant for a married couple, she instinctively hesitated—even though they weren’t actually going to sleep together, she felt inexplicably tense.

Just as she turned to leave the bedroom—

“Lie down and try it.”

He stood silently behind her without making a sound—she hadn’t even noticed when he’d arrived. Da Hyun turned her head, briefly showing her surprise before quickly hiding it.

“Lie down where?”

“Where else? On our bed, of course.”

Min Hyuk tilted his head, gesturing toward the bed as if it were obvious.

Da Hyun was speechless, opening and closing her mouth. She nearly blurted out, “Are you crazy?”

Since they’d already registered their marriage, Kang Min Hyuk had officially become Han Da Hyun’s husband. Becoming a married couple had been simple—just a single sheet of paper was all it took. No one even bothered to ask if this was a marriage born of true love.

Min Hyuk gave a light smile, closed the door, and stood beside her.

“How do you like the house? Do you like it?”

“Yes, I like the house. But ‘our bed’? That sounds like we’re definitely going to share it.”

Da Hyun looked up blankly at Min Hyuk, who stood over 20 centimeters taller than her. She wanted to ask why he’d closed the door, but first, she needed to clarify what he’d just said.

“I thought it’d be best for us to sleep together since we’re married. That’s why I only brought in one bed.”

“But we’re not really a married couple.”

Da Hyun narrowed her eyes, drawing a firm line with decisive clarity. She’d assumed, of course, they’d each have their own rooms and sleep separately.

Faced with this unexpected situation, Da Hyun felt flustered.

“We never know when someone might find out our marriage is fake, so it’s safer to share a room and act like a real couple at home too. We have staff employed here—word could easily slip out if we’re not careful.”

His deep voice cracked slightly. Min Hyuk insisted this was the best course of action to keep their secret safe from others.

Da Hyun bit the soft flesh inside her mouth.

She’d thought this marriage would grant her a peaceful life, yet on the very first day, she’d already run into an unforeseen difficulty.

Embarrassed by his suggestive words, Da Hyun’s lips twitched, and she tensed her body to shake off the contact she felt at her waist.

“Why run away? We’re married now. It’s not like I’m trying to do anything inappropriate.”

Min Hyuk looked at Da Hyun as she tried to pull away from him, finding her adorably flustered. A sharp pang pierced his chest as memories from the past rushed back—she didn’t remember anything and was clearly wary of him.

Even though he understood, he couldn’t help but feel bitterly disappointed.

Unaware of Min Hyuk’s complicated emotions, Da Hyun looked up at him and firmly refused.

Sleeping in the same bed with someone she didn’t even like? In her mind, that was simply unthinkable.

“Kang Min Hyuk, this is really putting me in a tough spot. We have a contract, remember? Did you forget the terms?”

Their marriage was purely ceremonial. She’d assumed he understood that as well. Her plan had been to live quietly and peacefully until Min Hyuk achieved his goals, then sign the divorce papers and leave for another country to start a new life.

“Contracts can always have additional clauses added, you know.”

Min Hyuk concealed his true feelings. Now, finally, they were alone together without any outside interference—he could be with her, just as he’d always longed for.

He truly wanted to stay with Da Hyun. If it were up to him, he’d skip work altogether just to spend every moment of the day with her.

Waking up together, eating meals, sharing small conversations—just like any ordinary married couple.

Wanting to wake up and fall asleep beside the person you love was only natural.

But she, knowing nothing, couldn’t understand him at all.

“Oh, and—would it be alright if I spoke to you informally, Da Hyun? Even though it’s a politically arranged marriage, we can’t act like strangers. Rumors tend to blow things out of proportion in places we’d never expect.”

Da Hyun’s lips parted slightly, but no words came out right away. This man wasn’t keeping his distance—in fact, he was now suggesting they speak casually to each other.

Since he was older, using informal speech wasn’t an issue, but Da Hyun shook her head. As his gentle, lingering scent—not a strong perfume—reached her, she hastily cleared her throat.

“You can speak informally if you want, but I don’t want us to get close. Didn’t we already agree to just play the part of a happy couple until we divorce?”

She’d thought she’d finally escaped and gained her freedom.

She hadn’t realized there was still another mountain to climb to truly be free.

And that mountain was Kang Min Hyuk.

“Even so, I’d rather be closer to you than to anyone else.”

Min Hyuk spoke with a bitter smile. For some reason, Da Hyun felt a pang of guilt, as if he’d been hurt.

“I agreed to include Yusong Group in the upcoming research project. That was their condition for letting you marry me.”

Min Hyuk explained to Da Hyun how he’d persuaded Su Cheol, giving her a chance to think and decide for herself.

“If you want a divorce now, I’ll grant it. But you’ll have to deal with the consequences yourself. Are you sure that’s okay?”

Hearing that he’d secured approval for Yusong Group’s inclusion in the new domestic AI research project as part of their marriage agreement, Da Hyun fell deep in thought.

She’d only vaguely known he worked in artificial intelligence in the U.S. She’d assumed he was just an engineer—she had no idea he possessed the capability to serve as the lead director of a major domestic AI research initiative.

“You understand what this means, right?”

Of course she did. Da Hyun nodded, signaling she understood.

“I get it.”

Because of their marriage, Su Cheol had finally gained Yusong Group’s entry into the AI development project he’d so desperately wanted—but if she pursued an annulment lawsuit, Yusong Group would be excluded from the domestic AI development entirely.

In short, if she filed a lawsuit, Su Cheol wouldn’t stay idle.

“I want you to be free too. Think this over carefully for your own sake. I’ll respect your decision.”

His tone, filled with genuine care for her, made Da Hyun’s throat tighten. She couldn’t keep her hands still, repeatedly clenching and unclenching them without purpose.

“Wait—so I was basically tricked into a fraudulent marriage, right?”

“Didn’t you know? They call it a strategic marriage, but the real meaning is a scam marriage.”

At her blunt question, Min Hyuk’s eyes widened in surprise—and finding her adorably candid, he couldn’t help but let out a soft laugh.

He closed the distance between them, stepping closer. Her feet felt glued to the floor; she couldn’t move even though he was approaching.

No matter how hard she tried to widen the gap again by tensing her toes, it was useless.

Just one more step forward, and their bodies would be pressed together—but Min Hyuk stopped there.

Instead, he bent his upper body down to meet her eye level and gazed intently at her. His lips curved into an amused smile, as if he found something deeply entertaining.

“Do you know what’s most important in artificial intelligence? Data. Unfortunately, Han Da Hyun’s AI system was lacking in data.”

Da Hyun kept a careful distance from Min Hyuk, wary of him. Lack of data—maybe he was right. Ever since deciding to marry him, she’d never bothered to learn much about Kang Min Hyuk.

After all, the marriage had been set in stone, and she’d assumed they’d just perform as a show-couple for mutual benefit.

She couldn’t understand why he was acting like a real husband. His friendly approach made her uncomfortable.

Still, it was better than being back at the main house with Su Cheol—so she’d have to endure it.

She’d thought she could see through his intentions, but she was wrong. The more time they spent together, the harder it became to understand him.

Kang Min Hyuk was like impenetrable darkness. Even so, she had no intention of shedding tears in front of a man who’d known her true self from the beginning and begging him to cancel the marriage.

“Kang Min Hyuk—are you really back just to dethrone Kang Si Hoon and become chairman of HG Group? Or is that not it at all? What’s your real goal?”

Min Hyuk straightened his back, having been leaning forward. Instead of answering, he reached out abruptly, gripped her nape firmly, and pulled her toward him.

Before Da Hyun could even tense up to pull away, she froze under his lowered gaze—his eyes locked onto hers as he looked up at her.

“!!”

Startled, Da Hyun’s eyebrows shot up, her lips parting and then snapping shut. Quickly, she covered her mouth with both hands.

Had he leaned in just a little more, their lips would have met.

Min Hyuk simply gazed at her, finding her reaction endearing.

“You’ll need to get used to this much, at least. Otherwise, people won’t believe we’re a real married couple. Don’t you think?”

He gently massaged her nape, careful not to hurt her, then let go.

“I’ll sleep in the study tonight. You must be tired—rest well. Hey, look.”

His breath brushed against her ear. His voice, soft and sweet as though it might melt her eardrums, sent a shiver through Da Hyun’s entire body.

Min Hyuk left the room with a smile still on his lips, leaving Da Hyun standing frozen like a statue.

Only after the door clicked shut with a light, cheerful sound did she lower her hands from her mouth.

“Gosh… I almost got into real trouble.”

Sleep was clearly out of the question tonight. Da Hyun stared blankly at the closed bedroom door he’d just walked through.

She raised one hand and placed it over her chest.

First, she had to calm her racing heartbeat.

In the end, she stayed wide awake all night. Thankfully, the bedroom had its own bathroom, so she didn’t have any trouble freshening up.

Even though she’d locked the door the moment he left, she couldn’t sleep comfortably. Dark shadows now ringed her eyes from lack of proper rest.

She’d spent the whole night worrying about what to do if Kang Min Hyuk—this burdensome man—ever tried to cross that line.

His name was Kang Min Hyuk. At thirty years old, he worked in artificial intelligence in the U.S., employed by a world-renowned corporation known to everyone. And he’d achieved this position at the youngest age possible.

If he’d returned to Korea as a domestic AI developer, it could only mean his coding abilities far surpassed those of ordinary people.

She’d briefly seen him once on the news before, but had no idea it was Kang Min Hyuk—he’d never been associated with HG Group in those reports.

That was all she knew about him.

He’d seemed to have completely severed ties with HG Group and was living his own life perfectly. So why had he come back? Had he really abandoned his field just to take over the company?

At first, she’d assumed he returned solely to crush Kang Si Hoon and take control of the corporation. But now, even that seemed uncertain.

Wallowing alone, clutching her head, would only waste more time.

“What’s your real goal?”

Why did he insist so much on appearing as a real married couple? Why was he so kind and gentle toward her?

“It’s a mystery. A total mystery.”

A sigh slipped out between her lips.

He truly was an incomprehensible man.
