Shade, who had been concealing his identity, flicked Eve’s stubby legs hanging over his shoulder, annoyed by her overly candid remark.

“Why, mister?”

The oblivious child blinked wide-eyed at him.

“We’re just neighbors.”

Instead of answering Eve directly, Shade corrected the child’s statement.

The shopkeeper, made uneasy by the stiff tone, gave an awkward chuckle and spread cream onto the crêpe.

Fortunately, the shopkeeper didn’t seem to have noticed Shade’s true identity.
