Eve trembled her lips and choked back tears when Shade snapped at her.

Luise, flustered, stepped forward to comfort Eve, but suddenly Guardwell stretched out his head and nuzzled Luise.

Though startled at first by the horse’s head—nearly as large as her own torso—Luise cautiously reached out and stroked Guardwell’s face, softened by his endearing behavior.

Shade and the stablehand stared at Guardwell in shock.
