A Relentless Senior (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 3
Tuesday, 9 a.m. — the lecture on “Understanding Chinese Characters” had just ended.
As Sa Rang packed her bag, the male student sitting next to her struck up a conversation.
“Are you a freshman by any chance?”
“Yeah.”
“I’m a freshman too, but I messed up my course registration and ended up in this class alone. I don’t know anyone, so I thought I’d at least say hi and get to know someone.”
The boy spoke in a friendly manner, and Sa Rang gave him a light smile.
“Since we’re both freshmen, can I drop the formalities?”
“Sure.”
They’d be taking the same class all semester—it seemed nice to get along well as fellow newcomers—so Sa Rang readily nodded.
“I’m Jung Yoon Jae from the Department of Physical Education.”
“I’m Lee Sa Rang from the Department of Electronic Engineering.”
“Wow. Just hearing that major gives me a headache.”
Yoon Jae shook his head, and Sa Rang immediately retorted to keep up.
“To me, physical ed sounds worse. I’ve got zero athletic ability. What’s your sport anyway?”
“People always assume all PE majors are athletes, but I actually got in through the non-performance track. I used to be a swimmer in middle school, but had to quit because of an injury.”
“Oh, I see.”
As they stepped out of the lecture hall, Yoon Jae kept the conversation going.
“Did you mess up your registration too?”
“No. I just really like Chinese characters, so I signed up.”
“So you’re into things that give people headaches, huh?”
Yoon Jae scrunched up his face, and Sa Rang let out a soft chuckle.
“Can I get your number?”
“Huh?”
Sa Rang looked up at Yoon Jae, who was much taller than her.
Despite his solid build, his expression was gentle.
She herself wasn’t shy, but she wasn’t this outgoing either—so she found it a little fascinating.
“You don’t have to give it if it feels like a hassle.”
“No, it’s not a hassle at all.”
Sa Rang held out her hand.
Yoon Jae handed her his phone; she typed in her number and gave it back.
She thought how often people exchanged numbers at the start of a new semester.
“Thanks. If you ever need anything, feel free to contact me. I’m probably the one who’ll ask first anyway.”
Yoon Jae scratched the back of his head and grinned.
Since both the College of Engineering and the College of Physical Education were in the same direction, they walked side by side until they reached a fork in the path.
“Is the engineering cafeteria food good?”
“Eh, it’s okay.”
“The PE cafeteria is better than most restaurants. Come try it sometime—I’ll treat you. I’ve got quite a few meal vouchers from seniors.”
“Alright, got it.”
Sa Rang smiled and nodded.
To an outsider, they might have looked like old friends.
That’s just how easygoing Jung Yoon Jae was.
“Take care, then.”
“Yeah, bye.”
Yoon Jae waved and headed toward the PE building.
She, too, hurried off toward Engineering for her next class.

After finishing their foundational major class with Ji Woo, Sa Rang was starving.
Because all her morning classes started at 9 a.m., she’d been forced to eat breakfast early, leaving her quite hungry by lunchtime.
“Let’s grab something to eat. I can’t hold out anymore.”
Sure, there were tastier restaurants outside campus, but Sa Rang didn’t even have the energy to walk that far.
Trending
She just needed to fill her stomach with something—anything.
“Okay. I’m hungry too.”
With Ji Woo’s agreement, Sa Rang climbed the stairs to the second-floor cafeteria.
They both ordered Korean meals, loaded their trays, and sat down.
Just as Sa Rang scooped a large spoonful of rice into her mouth, Do Han and his friend Tae Hoon sat down across from them.
This was the very guy who’d called Do Han “Jidokhan” during freshman orientation.
That day, Ji Woo had been in the same orientation group as Tae Hoon—and by the time they returned to campus, she already had a crush on him.
Thanks to their budding friendship, Sa Rang had learned a bit about Do Han from Ji Woo.
Tae Hoon, after three attempts at the college entrance exam, had enrolled as a freshman, served in the military after his first year, and met Do Han last year in a general education class.
Though their majors differed, being the same age had quickly made them best friends.
And there was one more thing:
Do Han was their neighbor.
He lived in the building right next to theirs in the alley filled with studio apartments.
Sa Rang considered this fate.
“Oh! Hello.”
Ji Woo greeted them first, and Sa Rang bowed her head slightly.
She’d crossed paths with Tae Hoon in the engineering building before—they were in the same department, after all.
“Hey. It’s even nicer running into you here.”
“Do you guys usually have lunch here in Engineering?”
“The main dining hall’s tastier, but it’s far, so we usually just eat here.”
Hearing Tae Hoon and Ji Woo’s conversation, Sa Rang decided she’d have to come here more often.
Maybe she’d get to see Do Han at lunch every day.
On those days, the food would surely taste better than anywhere else.
Even now, the rice in her mouth tasted as sweet as sugar—
until Ji Woo suddenly asked an unexpected question.
“But Sa Rang, who’s that guy?”
“That guy?”
“The tall, well-built one—you were walking with him earlier.”
Ji Woo had watched Sa Rang chatting casually with an unfamiliar guy and had meant to ask her back in the classroom.
She’d forgotten when the professor arrived right away.
But seeing Do Han—just as tall as that guy—brought it all back.
“Oh… a friend from ‘Understanding Chinese Characters.’”
Sa Rang hesitated a moment, unsure what to call Yoon Jae.
He wasn’t just “a person,” and calling him “a guy” felt odd, so she simply settled on “friend.”
“Friend? Oh, Lee Sa Rang—you’re already dating someone?”
Ji Woo’s excited exclamation made Sa Rang frown.
“Not a boyfriend—a friend. We just happened to sit next to each other, and since we were both alone in class, we exchanged greetings, that’s all.”
“And exchanged numbers too?”
“How’d you know?”
“You always said you’d get a boyfriend as soon0 as you entered college—you’re impressive!”
Frustrated, Sa Rang was about to insist it wasn’t like that—but Tae Hoon, sensing juicy gossip, jumped in with a playful grin.
“So Sa Rang, is that why you came to college? To find a boyfriend?”
“Not exactly—it’s just that…”
“But isn’t he from PE? His build’s unusual.”
Before she could explain, Ji Woo fired another question, leaving Sa Rang sighing in defeat.
“Yeah. He’s in PE, but he’s not an athlete. He used to swim in middle school but quit due to injury—got in through the non-performance track.”
“Wow, you two must be really close if you know all that.”
“I only know because he told me. We just met today—how could we be close?”
“You gave your number to a guy you just met. He must be really good-looking, huh?”
With Tae Hoon joining in too, Sa Rang felt like dying.

Meanwhile, Do Han quietly ate his meal without a word.
His complete lack of interest stung her for no good reason.
Before she could answer Tae Hoon’s last question, Ji Woo chimed in.
“He looked fine even from a distance. What’s that PE guy’s name?”
Sa Rang, eyes lowered to her food, replied weakly, still watching Do Han.
“Jung Yoon Jae.”
“Let me meet him too sometime. He seems like fun.”
“Sure.”
She forced a smile, hiding the ache in her heart.

After finishing their meal, they headed downstairs to the first floor.
As they chatted about where their next classes were, Tae Hoon pointed out someone to Do Han.
“Isn’t that Park Hye Ri?”
She occasionally showed up in front of the engineering building, so her face was familiar.
Following Tae Hoon’s gesture, Do Han’s eyes landed on Hye Ri—and he stopped walking.
Hye Ri, meeting his gaze, hesitated briefly before approaching them.
“Oppa, are you done with class?”
Her cautious, almost anxious demeanor made Tae Hoon, Ji Woo, and Sa Rang even more nervous.
Do Han, however, remained expressionless—as if used to this.
“What’s up?”
“I’m not feeling well… If you have time, could you take me home?”
Her face was filled with apology—and indeed, she looked pale.
The three of them, excluding Do Han, anxiously worried she might collapse right there.
She looked that pitiful.
Do Han stared at her silently for a moment, then turned to Tae Hoon.
“I’ll go ahead.”
“Huh? But your class—”
“I probably won’t make it.”
“What?”
Tae Hoon couldn’t hide his disbelief—skipping class over this seemed ridiculous.
Why not just call her a taxi?
He disapproved of Do Han’s insistence on personally escorting her.
Yet with someone clearly unwell standing right in front of him, he couldn’t very well hold his friend back.
Helplessly watching the two walk away, Ji Woo finally asked,
“Is that older sister Do Han oppa’s girlfriend?”
At first glance, Hye Ri hardly looked like a freshman.
She radiated maturity.
Her chest-length brown hair curled luxuriously, and her natural makeup made her fresh-faced beauty stand out even more.
She was the kind of girl even other girls found stunningly pretty.
“No. Just an acquaintance—like a younger sister.”
“She doesn’t seem like an engineering student at all.”
“She’s in Korean Literature. Second year.”
Ji Woo, who’d assumed she must be at least a third-year, was surprised.
She even looked like she could be a senior.
Compared to Hye Ri, she and Sa Rang looked like high schoolers.
“So you’re close with oppa too?”
“Not really. I just don’t like her, that’s all.”
“Why? She’s pretty.”
“Does being pretty mean I have to like her?”
“Well… not necessarily.”

She’d always thought no guy disliked a pretty girl—this was unexpected.
Tae Hoon really seemed to dislike Hye Ri, scrunching his face in distaste.
“Anyway, she’s definitely not Do Han’s girlfriend. They’ve never dated.”
Not knowing the full details of their relationship, Tae Hoon kept his words measured.
“But if she’s not his girlfriend, why take her all the way home? Do Han oppa doesn’t seem like the type who’s that kind to just anyone.”
“Right? That’s what I don’t get—why’s that ‘Jidokhan’ acting like that toward Park Hye Ri?”
“By the way, why’s Do Han oppa’s nickname ‘Jidokhan’? Is it just because of his name?”
At Ji Woo’s question, Sa Rang waited even more intently for the answer.
Seeing their eager eyes, Tae Hoon instead posed a question of his own.
“I’m a third-year at this age because I retook the exam three times—but do you know why Ji Do Han’s only a second-year at twenty-six?”
When both girls shook their heads, Tae Hoon continued.
“He used to go to Korea University.”
“Korea University?”
Their eyes widened in shock.
Though their own school was considered top-tier, it was no match for Korea University—the school renowned for gathering only the nation’s brightest.
“Yeah. He spent three years there, then retook the college entrance exam and transferred to our school—not as a lateral transfer, but by withdrawing and re-enrolling from scratch.”
“But… why? Korea University’s engineering college is way more prestigious.”
Since Korea University ranked above theirs in every college entrance score, they couldn’t understand it at all.
“I asked Do Han the same thing—want to know what he said?”
“What?”
“He said it’s because our campus is prettier.”
“What?”
Even more baffled by this illogical reason, Ji Woo and Sa Rang frowned simultaneously.
“But I have a friend in Korea University’s Computer Science department, so I looked into it a bit—and apparently, Do Han was a real prodigy there. He’d even developed apps and earned money back in high school. So what’s he doing here? He acts like the college entrance exam is just some final quiz! I barely scraped in after three tries—and here he is, throwing away Korea University just like that. That’s why he’s ‘Jidokhan.’”
Ji Woo and Sa Rang nodded in agreement.
As former examinees themselves, they’d rather die than retake that nightmare exam—even in dreams.
“I started calling him that for this reason, but apparently he’s had that nickname since childhood—so I guess he’s always been ‘ruthless.’ You can kind of see it, right? Expressionless, cold—hard to get close to. But once you do, he’s actually a great guy: excellent at every sport, loyal to his friends—the best as a buddy. Terrible as a boyfriend, though. Girls like caring guys, and Ji Do Han’s the opposite of that.”
“Still, he must be popular with girls, right? Do Han oppa’s really good-looking.”
“He is popular—mostly fourth-years confess to Ji Do Han. They just never last long.”
“Why? Is Do Han oppa a playboy?”
“Not really. But every girl who’s dated him says the same thing after they break up: ‘Ji Do Han is truly ruthless.’ I was curious what that meant—then later heard a rumor that explains it: Ji Do Han never, ever tells his girlfriend he loves her.”
Tae Hoon suddenly felt awkward—he shouldn’t be spilling his friend’s love life to underclassmen.
He realized he’d already said too much and decided to shut up.
Just then, they reached a fork in the path, so he quickly said his farewells.
“I’ve got to go this way. See you later.”
“Okay. Take care.”
Sa Rang bowed her head and walked with Ji Woo toward the library.
After hearing Tae Hoon’s stories about Do Han, he wouldn’t leave her thoughts.
Ji Woo, too, seemed to be mulling over his words.
“He retook the entrance exam just because our campus is pretty? There’s gotta be another reason, right?”
“Another reason?”
“It doesn’t make sense. He wouldn’t really drop out of Korea University just for that.”
Sa Rang slowly nodded.
But something else occupied her mind even more:
What exactly was the relationship between Hye Ri, whom they’d met in front of Engineering, and Do Han?
So absorbed was she in that question, she had no room left to wonder why he’d retaken the exam.
