Most of them were emergency patients admitted overnight. Sori, having been on duty, must have had a tough night.
“Someone definitely drank a liter of Fanta last night. Definitely,” fellow Seung Hyuk commented while looking at the lengthy list of new patients.
Sori, distributing the list, looked visibly exhausted, with red, puffy eyes.
Hospital night duty typically runs from 6 PM to 8 AM the next morning. Although residents are supposed to rest the next day, first-year residents often don’t get the chance due to the need to watch their seniors.
Hyun Woo looked particularly displeased, especially noticing that Sori was overly attentive to Kang Se Hoon, a senior doctor.
That day, with the absence of Director Park due to an external engagement, the meeting ended succinctly under Hyun Woo’s leadership.
“Kang Se Hoon,” Hyun Woo called out.
“Yes, Professor,” Se Hoon replied.
“When is the surgery for patient Choi Min Kook?” Hyun Woo inquired.
“Um, just a moment,” Se Hoon said, checking the schedule before informing Hyun Woo of the date and time.

“Have you considered the surgery method?” Hyun Woo asked.
“Isn’t it an indirect anastomosis?” Se Hoon responded.
“Why?” Hyun Woo probed.
“Because of the patient’s young age. Usually, in teenagers, indirect anastomosis is sufficiently effective, and the surgery complexity is much lower…”
Hyun Woo seemed dissatisfied with Se Hoon’s answer, rubbing his forehead with an expression of boredom.
Se Hoon’s face grew increasingly somber under Hyun Woo’s scrutiny.
“You’ve been focusing only on the board exams and neglecting other studies, haven’t you?” Hyun Woo remarked.
Se Hoon humbly apologized, as everyone tends to be more submissive in front of Hyun Woo.
In the hospital hierarchy, Hyun Woo, even as a fourth-year resident, had the authority to make even those above Sori in the pecking order squirm.
Hyun Woo’s gaze was particularly intense that day, almost chilling.

Sori, feeling the discomfort of the situation, decided to step out of the department for a while to take a break.
Feeling uncomfortable under the scrutiny in the department, Sori quietly exited. Se Hoon’s glancing look that hinted her to leave, and not wanting to get involved and scolded alongside Hyun Woo played a part in her decision.
Walking wearily, Sori impulsively headed towards the emergency exit, mulling over her options. Should she go to the on-call room, an empty patient room, or is going home too much trouble? She thought that just two hours of sleep might revive her.
Sitting on the emergency exit stairwell, she yawned uncontrollably, thinking it might be a good place to rest for a bit. Suddenly, she heard the heavy door open and footsteps descending the stairs. Lifting her head, she saw Hyun Woo approaching.
“Professor…” Her voice was unusually slow, as if a tape stretched out.
Having just seen him angrily reprimanding the chief in the department, she knew she should stand up, but she felt too heavy and could only lift her head to look at him.
Narrowing his eyes, Hyun Woo looked down at Sori, who was sitting on the stairs, resting her head against the wall. He then sat beside her, extending one of his long legs a few steps down.
“Not going home?” he asked.
Sori blinked her sleepy, round eyes, unable to respond. Her silence was an acknowledgment that she couldn’t leave yet. Another yawn threatened to break free.
Covering her mouth with her hands, she buried her face in her knees and yawned, embarrassed to do so in front of Hyun Woo.
“Sorry,” she apologized.

“You’ll tear your mouth,” he remarked.
“I’m so tired,” she lamented softly.
“Stop being melodramatic and get up,” he instructed firmly.
“…Okay.”
Following Hyun Woo’s stern command, Sori, rubbing her eyes, struggled to get up. Suddenly, her hand was pulled towards Hyun Woo, and he unfolded her palm.
Taking a pen he had in his mouth, he started writing numbers on her palm.
“I’ll be in the outpatient clinic for the next four hours. Lock yourself in and rest,” he said.
Sori, not fully grasping his words, looked blank. Her palm tickled, making her involuntarily cringe.
“As you frequent my place, you might as well sleep there,” he suggested.
“Ah…”

Realizing what he meant, Sori understood he was giving her the passcode to his research office.
“Don’t get caught sleeping here,” he warned.
Without waiting for her response, he left abruptly.
That same afternoon, after finishing his outpatient duties, Hyun Woo briefly visited the ward. Unlike the previous night, the ward was peaceful that afternoon.
At the station, nurses shared homemade cookies given by a patient.
“Would you like one, Professor Seo?” they offered.
“No, thanks,” he declined.
Shortly after, a small figure appeared in front of Hyun Woo, who was standing near the station. Looking up from the monitor, he saw it was Min Guk.
“Hello, Professor,” greeted Min Guk.

Xie Zhi and Fang Xianxing who had known each other for less than three days through a blind date sat in the same car in front of the civil affairs bureau. They had a disagreement and failed to get married.
Xie Zhi immediately took out his phone, slid through his contacts, and randomly selected the next marriage candidate.
The woman snatched his phone and hung up. Looking at his phone wallpaper, she awkwardly changed the subject: “An ancient painting, eh? It looks pretty good, it’s just that the person in the painting looks a bit like me.”
When he heard this, he sarcastically mocked her for being so delusional, completely unaware that, the person in front of him was the reincarnation of Wen Ru, the famous prime minister of Yuan Shun whom he most admired…
