Kang Woo summoned Secretary Choi into his office the moment he returned. Ignoring the towering stack of documents awaiting approval, he fixed his gaze on her. The fierce aura encircling his dark pupils made her shoulders involuntarily tense up.

“Let’s pick up where we left off earlier. You said the dismissed housekeeper and driver are connected to my father?”

“Sir, while they do have some connection to Congressman Cha, that doesn’t necessarily mean he orchestrated this incident.”

Kang Woo picked up a pen and tapped its tip rhythmically against the desk. In the heavy silence, the occasional faint clicking amplified the tension. A cold smile briefly flickered across his tightly closed lips.

“Secretary Choi, have you ever heard the story about female giraffes?”

“Sir?”

“After giving birth, a female giraffe sometimes kicks her newborn once more—if it can’t stand and walk right away, she abandons it.”

“My father is a man unlike others. Like a beast culling the weak among its offspring, he refuses to acknowledge children he deems inadequate. You know this well enough.”

“Even so, it’s still premature to conclude that Congressman Cha intended to threaten you…”

Choi, who had observed Nam Tae’s temperament since childhood, struggled to finish her sentence—she knew all too well just how harshly Nam Tae had treated Kang Woo and Hyun Sook.

Nam Tae was severe toward his family. If they raised their voices even slightly, he called them vulgar; if they spoke softly, he scoffed, saying they were too timid to be useful anywhere.

If they walked too quickly, he criticized them for appearing unrefined; if too slowly, he scolded them for laziness. He nitpicked every gesture, insisted they seek permission for clothing choices and outings—even trivial matters weren’t spared his scrutiny.

But everything changed when Kang Woo entered middle school. After a major confrontation with his father, Kang Woo defiantly pursued the opposite path of everything Nam Tae directed.

He rejected studying abroad and instead enrolled at S University, choosing computer engineering over business or political science.
