On the way in the ambulance, Se Ah was so overwhelmed with crying she couldn’t think straight. No matter how hard she bit down on her lip, sobs kept slipping out. Even though the ambulance was warm, her hands and feet trembled violently like an aspen leaf.

“Ma’am, are you alright?”

The calm-faced paramedic worried about Se Ah nearly as much as the patient himself.

“He’s not… dead, is he?”

“He appears to have lost consciousness due to high fever. We’ll arrive at Hanseong Hospital shortly. A doctor will see him right away, so please don’t worry too much.”

“…Yes.”

Hearing the paramedic’s words, Se Ah nodded.

Once again, she lowered her upper body and pressed her ear against Kang Woo’s chest. As the paramedic said, he was alive. Intellectually, she knew it too—his heart was still beating, his pulse still there. Yet anxiety kept creeping in, making her palms slick with sweat.

That morning, when she opened her eyes, she found herself nestled in Kang Woo’s arms.

His arm was wrapped around her, his head pressed tightly against her neck… Though, truthfully, it was unclear who was holding whom.

Just yesterday he’d been ruthlessly insistent about having to work. Seeing him now clinging tightly to her, a complicated mix of emotions washed over her—irritation, relief.

Still, annoyance edged out relief, so she gently pushed his forearm away. His sturdy frame shifted limply beneath her hand. Only then did she take a closer look at him.

His already pale face had gone even whiter, damp with sweat around his forehead. When she reached out and traced along his spine, his white shirt clung to his skin, soaked through.

‘Mr. Kang Woo!’

She shook him, trying to wake him, but his eyes remained closed. Only his labored breathing came intermittently.
