“I want to buy only the very best things for my grandchild.”

Mi Jung thought back to her young son’s discharge from the hospital, wrapped tightly in the cheap receiving blanket provided by the hospital. There had been so many colorful, pretty blankets available, but she’d had to save money—so she’d used that plain hospital blanket until it was threadbare.

Even after her baby no longer needed the blanket, she couldn’t bring herself to throw it away. She’d reused it as a quilt, then a towel, clinging to it stubbornly—and that memory now passed through her heart with a sharp pang.

“No, Mother. Babies grow so fast—they really don’t need anything fancy. I’ll just pick something reasonably priced and practical.”

Da Jung tried to protest gently.
