Da Jung remained silent until Cha Myung Sook’s funeral procession was over.

Jae Ho stared blankly at the phone in Da Jung’s hand, assuming she’d already heard the news. After all, this was South Korea—the land of the internet. Hundreds of articles about Lee Jae Ho had flooded every major portal site; there was no way Da Jung hadn’t seen them, even amidst her mourning.

Why wasn’t she saying anything?

Jae Ho didn’t speak either. Nothing mattered more than the pain Da Jung was going through right now. He trusted she’d be the one to speak first when the time felt right.

After the funeral rites, Cha Myung Sook was laid to rest in a columbarium on the outskirts of Gyeonggi Province—a place familiar to Jae Ho. It was where Yoon Jong Soo and Yoon Woo Jung rested, and somewhere he visited faithfully once a year.

Beside the photo of Woo Jung—smiling brightly in his school uniform—Cha Myung Sook’s photo was now placed. Jae Ho bowed quietly to them.

Once all the formalities were done, they headed home late that afternoon.

Da Jung sent Kyung Jun and Kyung Mi away when they offered to stay with her. Jae Ho, who remained by her side until the end, helped her sit down on the living room sofa.

“You’ve done so much already.”

Jae Ho smiled faintly and met her eyes. Despite standing so close, she felt impossibly distant, making him reach out just to confirm her warmth. Da Jung’s hand trembled intermittently.

“Thank you for helping me.”

“It’s only right that I do this.”

Jae Ho answered firmly.

Da Jung stared down at Jae Ho’s hand resting over hers, then quietly slipped her hand away.

“And what exactly did I hear today?”
