“Father. You can’t truly be thinking of going there.”

Lion’s voice, barely holding back his revulsion toward his own blood and the self-loathing it spawned.

Kasha sensed the atmosphere had turned ominous and reached out toward Eve, who immediately darted into her arms as if she’d been waiting for that very moment.

Yet the Grand Duke, as though noticing nothing at all, brazenly furrowed his brow. His bloodshot eyes darted aimlessly around, lacking any focus.

“Didn’t you hear me? We’ve been invited! Change into your formal uniform at once. We must go and demonstrate the enduring strength of House Oscillote!”

His cloudy eyes, genuinely convinced his own nonsense made perfect sense, and his domineering tone.

“Father.”

Lion exhaled a long, slow breath after calling out to him.

Conversations with his father had lately always been exhausting and anger-inducing. Bearing that with a body tainted by a curse was no easy feat—he himself was always on the verge of exploding.

The sole reason he still held back that fury was the simple, unbearable fact that this man was his “father.”

To Lion, “family” was the foremost value he must protect—the only shield he could forge for his pitiful younger siblings, Eve and Anthony. And his father, however flawed, was undeniably the one responsible for building and guarding that shield.

Lion’s teenage years had been defined by his desperate efforts to understand his father.
