11 Virtues A Hero's Civilian Friend Must Uphold (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 3
Before he could even finish his thought, Jae Kyung stood up first and helped Na Eun, brushing off the dust that had caked onto her outer coat from rolling on the ground, and asked,
“Are you okay?”
Instead of answering his worry-filled question—“You’re not hurt, right?”—she found it more important to quickly scan the chaotic surroundings.
Na Eun stared blankly at the sidewalk where she and Jae Kyung had just been standing.
Smoke was rising from what had been perfectly solid ground, and right beside them, a massive car was crumpled into the utility pole.
It was a traffic accident. With trembling hands, she pulled out her phone.
“C-call… call the police.”
“Na Eun.”
“We have to report it… there’s someone inside that car!”
Setting aside the fact that she’d nearly been run over and killed, the thought that someone might be trapped inside that crumpled metal shell—like a piece of paper—sent a chill down her spine.
Determined to call an ambulance immediately, Na Eun pressed her shaking fingers to the screen, but Jae Kyung’s large hand stopped her.
“Na Eun, snap out of it.”
“…Huh?”
“…There’s no one in there.”
“What?”
Before she could even question what he meant, her head turned automatically, and she finally saw a bluish glow emanating from the shattered driver’s side window of the wrecked car.
The driver’s seat was completely empty.
Na Eun stared blankly at the dashboard’s faint blue light flickering in the darkness and thought to herself,
…Did the car move on its own? But before she could dwell on that idea any longer,
“…Damn it.”
A low curse slipped out from Jae Kyung’s mouth—the kind of harsh language she’d never heard from him before, not even once since they’d started dating.
She didn’t even have time to be surprised by his unfamiliar tone.
The crumpled, mangled car suddenly roared to life as if it were alive, reversed off the utility pole it had smashed into, and began turning its wheels toward them.
Toward Na Eun and Jae Kyung.
“Jae Kyung…”
“Na Eun, can you run?”
Well, of course she could run—but could she possibly outrun a car? Her eyes darted around anxiously, and finally, seeing no other option, she gripped the hand of the only person she could rely on and braced her legs.
If running meant dying or standing here helplessly meant dying—it was all the same. At the very least, she might as well struggle.
Holding his hand tightly, Na Eun followed Jae Kyung’s lead and ran, hearing the screeching, grinding sound of twisted metal behind her.
She’d resolved not to look back—but curiosity got the better of her, and when she glanced over her shoulder, she saw a white SUV dragging its battered frame, rolling its wheels toward them.
If a person were to describe it, it would be a zombie.
What is this? Are we the protagonists of a mechanical zombie story, not a superhero one?
Na Eun had never imagined herself as the main hero anyway—more like the civilian friend of the protagonist—and now, faced with this absurd sight, she bitterly regretted looking and quickly fixed her gaze forward again.
Faster. Faster. She silently repeated the word endlessly as she sprinted like a madwoman, but how could a human ever outrun a car?
In the end, the vehicle nearly hit her again, and exhausted beyond measure, Na Eun collapsed onto the ground, letting go of Jae Kyung’s hand.
Her face twisted as if she were about to cry, and she lowered her head.
Could it really be? Could it really be that after all the movies and shows she’d watched, she’d actually end up saying that clichéd line herself…?!
“I can’t go on. You go alone!”
I’m done for! Sob.
Crouched on the ground with her head buried low like a tragic heroine from a movie, Na Eun’s posture practically screamed doomed protagonist.
Jae Kyung looked down at her, chuckling weakly despite the situation, then quickly hardened his expression as he noticed the zombie car now right in front of them.
“Relax your body.”
“Huh?”
What? Before she could even ask,
With or without a scream—Jae Kyung slipped his hands under Na Eun’s back and legs and lifted her up in one swift motion.
Instinctively wrapping her arms around his neck to avoid falling, Na Eun buried her face into his neck.
Ah. So Jae Kyung wears cologne. It smells nice. She hated herself for having such random thoughts in this life-or-death moment—but what could she do?
Hoping Jae Kyung would never, ever find out his girlfriend was this much of a weirdo, she squeezed her eyes shut tight.
And then, just like being on a roller coaster, her body began accelerating against her will.
“Kyaaaah! Jae Kyung, too fast!”
Trending
Slowly! Please, slowly!
“If I go slowly, we’ll die right now, Na Eun.”
“Don’t say things like that so sweetly…!”
His voice was even nice! She decided to keep her embarrassing shivers to herself.
It was already well past 11 p.m., deep into the night.
The shops along the street still had their lights on, and quite a few pedestrians were walking around besides Na Eun and Jae Kyung.
Yet, strangely, the insane zombie car seemed to target only the two of them.
Jae Kyung, with his exceptional reflexes, ran as if he were carrying nothing at all and ducked into areas with the fewest people.
Realizing it was more helpful to stay quietly nestled in his arms than to stubbornly insist on running again, Na Eun held her breath and tried desperately to lighten her weight by even a single gram—
When suddenly, Jae Kyung deliberately steered between two street trees, maneuvering the zombie car to crash into one. Na Eun’s eyes sparkled in admiration for his quick thinking—only for a moment—
Because with a loud crunch, the already crushed hood of the car straightened itself again, wobbling back onto its wheels.
The headlights flickered menacingly, as if ready to devour them whole.
It seemed to glare at Na Eun and Jae Kyung with murderous intent.
That’s not a car.
That’s a monster.
Just as fresh fear surged through her, Jae Kyung muttered another unfamiliar curse under his breath.
He seemed to be thinking fast, then quickly set Na Eun down and pushed her behind himself.
“…Jae Kyung?”
“Just stay behind me.”
“What?”
What did that even mean?
Na Eun’s face turned pale.
She turned her head to look behind them—and saw only the apartment complex’s boundary wall.
In other words, it was a dead end.
And directly ahead stood the white SUV, half-wrecked but vibrating aggressively with a threatening hum.
“Just stay behind me”? Did he mean to use himself as a shield?
Panicked, she grabbed Jae Kyung’s arm, but he refused to meet her eyes and kept pushing her backward.
Jae Kyung was so resolute that Na Eun couldn’t take even one step forward.
He was stronger than she’d ever realized.
He didn’t seem like someone who’d just sprinted at full speed for nearly ten minutes while carrying a girl his own age.
Not even out of breath, he stood firmly in place, physically blocking Na Eun whenever she tried to move ahead.
Fear gripped her chest.
Through the wide, immovable wall of his back, she saw the car’s headlights flashing.
The engine roared loudly, the accelerator revved, and the wind howled—then the car charged straight toward Jae Kyung, who stood guarding Na Eun.
“Jae Kyung!”
No! Na Eun screamed, and at that exact moment, Jae Kyung braced himself, ready to block her completely in case she tried to rush forward—
—When the car’s tires screeched to a halt, as if a ravenous beast had suddenly lost its prey.
“…”
The shockwave from the abrupt stop vibrated through the ground and up her legs.
Na Eun had squeezed her eyes shut, terrified of witnessing what was about to happen—but when the pain she’d braced for never came, she slowly opened her eyes.
Jae Kyung had wrapped his arms tightly around her, crouching protectively over her as she sat huddled on the ground in fear.
Still in his embrace, she frantically checked him over—thankfully, he didn’t seem injured.
Which meant the car hadn’t hit them after all.
“Yeah, yeah, we’ve arrived. We’ll collect that rogue self-driving car.”
Hearing someone speaking from a distance, Na Eun looked up.
Far off, someone dressed entirely in black from head to toe stood holding a phone to their ear.
In their other hand, they held the crumpled car like a crushed garbage bag.
“Huh? Casualties? Not sure.”
The black-clad man tilted his head slightly in confusion, then, with an annoyed expression, stomped on the still-twitching vehicle to pin it down before calling out to Jae Kyung and Na Eun, who sat on the ground.
“You two—aren’t dead, right?”

“…Huh?”
“Yes. We’re fine.”
Before the bewildered Na Eun could respond, Jae Kyung calmly answered first.
The man in black nodded and turned back to his phone.
“They say no one’s dead. Good enough? I’m hanging up.”
Though someone on the other end seemed to be shouting furiously, the mysterious man ended the call without a second thought.
Relief washed over Na Eun at the realization they were safe, and she collapsed weakly into Jae Kyung’s arms.
Then, hearing a strangely familiar voice, her ears perked up instantly.
“You crazy bastard!”
That bold, brash cursing. That slightly low voice.
“Didn’t Center Director just tell you yesterday not to act alone?! And yet you keep doing whatever you want!”
It was Seung Joo.
Na Eun recognized her immediately—even without looking at the identically dressed hero who’d apparently tracked the black-clad man here.
K—no, Seung Joo—seemed utterly furious, yelling at the male hero who’d arrived first.
“If you plan to live life all alone, then go ahead and live alone! Why join our team just to stir up trouble?!”
“Pick one—either speak formally or drop the honorifics. Don’t mix them!”
“Ugh. I swear, I want to rip off your rank badge and fight you right now.”
Clearly enraged, Seung Joo ground her teeth, and the man merely gave a mocking chuckle.
“You’d lose.”
“…”
That guy. Even without saying it out loud, Na Eun could practically hear the curses Seung Joo was about to unleash—and despite everything, she burst out laughing.
Pfft. She’d quietly ducked her head to stifle her giggles, but apparently, her faint laughter reached the ears of the two heroes, whose hearing was far sharper than an ordinary person’s.
Both their gazes snapped toward her simultaneously—perhaps it was a momentary lapse in focus.
But it was exactly the kind of mistake you should never make if you wanted them to pretend they hadn’t noticed.
Na Eun absentmindedly lifted her head—and found herself staring straight into the eyes of both heroes.
And specifically, into Seung Joo’s.
“…Damn it.”
Only now recognizing her friend, Seung Joo cursed again—this time, genuinely—and Na Eun, feeling utterly deflated, turned her gaze toward empty space as if staring at distant mountains.
Inside, she muttered to herself.
…I’m the one who really wants to swear right now.
